Your statement is PERFECT.

A few years back, when I tried on Linux, after booting, it gave me a command line asking for a password. What password? I even had not done anything.

Now it's a nice GUI, almost on par with Windows. I see Ubuntu as my alternative OS which is free and maintained by Ubuntu Foundation.

I replaced Ubuntu 9.04 with Ubuntu 9.10, and got a nicer log-in interface. Other areas need to explore and see how much better.
