I duscussed this with a colleague the other day. We came to the conclusion that W7 has two major pros:

- improved 64 Bit Windows
- dealing with 4GB+ RAM

If one of these topics is a major requirement for you, you should go W7.

Besides that, there are quite a few little ones, e.g.:

  • improved user interface (window thumbs in taskbar, quick show of desktop, "shaking" a window minimizes all others, etc.)
  • fixed Vista annoyances (UAC, etc.)
I decided to go W7 32Bit two weeks ago. I am very happy with it but there are also a few thing that I have to get used to, specifically changes to the Windows Explorer and the Networking/Sharing.

Windows Explorer is now smart enough to sort number without leading zeros, like this

1.doc
2.doc
3.doc
...
9.doc
10.doc

Previous Explorers showed it this way:

1.doc
10.doc
2.doc
...

It can also be a drag though, e.g. Sharepoint web interface sorting is still the old way. If you connect via Explorer it looks different than in the web interface.

I had problems to stop W7 from broadcasting my local sources. Even though I switched off sharing (at least I thought I did) my Playstation 3 showed my W7 Media Player as a media server. I had to switch off sharing at several points in W7 to stop that broadcast.

There is one annoyance already that made it to several forums. The little network icon on the taskbar does not indicate traffic anymore, nor does it indicate an Internet connection anymore.

Anyways, there is probably more to come as pros and cons. Right now it is still a young system on my laptop.

Looking forward to hear your experiences.
