This is true albeit the IP tables are more than adequate for most of us, just difficult to configure for some using the command line hence the GUI's. I believe Uncomplicated Firewall (ufw) is flavor of the month as a frontend for IP tables because it's still in development but I found Firestarter better suited my own needs.
