I remember a few times Avira skips the signature updates for a 2 days at most, but never for a week or more. Maybe that's because I haven't kept my free version for long, kept switched back and forth between Avast, the premium versions, even AVG once (far too bloated for me), and Comodo AV.
Recently switched back to Avira, because submitting false positives to Comodo was getting annoying, and Avast's GUI component won't startup automatically no matter what I do.
