Yes, that's the most convenient way to check if there's unallocated space in your hard disk. That can also be used to shrink or extend a volume [Edit: available to Vista and newer.] (i.e. reduce or increase the size of a partition.)
I resize partitions quite a number of times and it's ok, but do a backup of important files, as highlighted, on the safe side.
