Whatever you might say or think about the most recent round of malware "test" results, one trend is abundantly clear. The effectiveness of signature based scanners is still in decline. This is not the fault of the various vendors, just a physical fact that it's impossible to generate new signature updates quickly enough. Not only is new malware appearing at an increasing rate but some will have several variants, all with a different signature. Some tests have demonstrated a detection rate of only 20% from signature based scanners. Add to this that some of the freeware solutions have extended periods between updates compared to their commercial cousins and you can begin to appreciate the problem.
