I too check for updates and new programmes using RSS feeds from download sites. If I see something I might like I go to the download site. Mostly I check out the site of the author and download from there but often the download links from the author's sites are either obscure or lead to multiple files and I'm not sure which to download in which case I return to the download site to get it. More and more often lately I find myself checking portablefreeware.com to see if there is a portable version to try first.
