Introduction

This is a listing of sites that legally offer free books, for reading and listening (audio), for Horror, Gothic and Ghost works.

All of these sites listed have content that is legal to distribute.  If you find that any site listed is offering content that can not be legally transferred, please let me know in the comments below. 

This list is not comprehensive and if you know of any other sites please post in the comments below or at our forums.

100Candles has 11 unique short horror stories for free reading online.

2020k (Horror) 313 books available for download in a variety of formats

AllKindsOfThingsKill is a collection of 9 short horror stories by Robert Best available for online viewing.

AnAngryAuthorScreaming has 12 short horror stories and some poetry available for free download in DOC.  Not intended for children.

Arthur's Classic Novels (Horror) (Horror2)Horror3)(Gothic) Nice collection of classic horror novels available for online viewing

BooksShouldBeFree While primarily an audio site, they also offer links to the print versions of the many classic horror and ghost novels featured.  A very nice collection.

BookYards (Horror) 72 novels available for download in pdf format

ClassicHorrorStories has a very nice, and large, collection of classic short horror stories for online viewing.

DailyLit has 10 classic horror novels and a collection of ghost stories.  These are emailed in installments for daily reading.

DigiLibraries offers 188 free novels in its Horror category.  This is a mix of classic and modern (unpublished authors) works.  All the ones I checked were available for download in EPUB or for reading online.  Some also offered PDF downloads.  Thanks to Jonathan Malka for this suggestion.

EdgarAllenPoeSocietyofBaltimore offers free reading online of the Collected Works of Edgar Allan Poe (a comprehensive collection of e-texts of all of Poe’s writings, from the original sources and with multiple versions as revised during his lifetime). 

ePubBooks has about 25 classic novels in its Horror category as well as 5 free classic novels in its Ghost Stories category and 21 free classic novels in its Gothic Fiction category.  These are all available for free download in EPUB.  There are links to download in other formats, but some of those are to pay sites.

Feedbooks (Horror)(Ghosts)  These are the public domain links good collections available for download in a variety of formats.  The original books section also has Ghost and Horror books for free download.

FictionPress offers over 15,000 free horror works of fan fiction.  Most appear to be short stories, but there are some novels in there.  These are available for free reading online.

FreeBook-S  has a few hundred classic horror novels available or download in epub, mobi or pdf.

Free eBooks.net (Horror/Gothic) 48 books available in pdf or html.

FreeOnlinebookstore  has a good size collection of horror novels, broken down further into 5 categories. S ince most link  off site, the options for downloading/viewing vary.

FreeOnlineNovels  has another unique collection of horror novels.  There are about 50 novels available for download in pdf.

Gaslight offers a chronological listing and listing by Author of horror and ghost stories from the 19th and 20th century.  These are offered for online viewing and were originally posted for weekly reading and discussion groups.  Although it appears the weekly groups are no more, the links I checked still were working.

GetFreeEBooks  has an unique collection of 36 free horror novels.  Links are offsite, so download/viewing options vary.

Munsey's (Horror) 989 books available for download in a large variety of formats.

Munsey'sMobile has a very large collection of free books in their Horror category.  There appear to be a number of different entries from Munsey's above.  These are all available for free viewing online and are also available for download in PDF, PRC and ePUB.

obooko  has 38 unique works in its horror collection.  Registration is required for free download in pdf.

OnlineBooksPage (Horror)(Ghosts) Links to a good amount of novels available for online viewing or download.

OnlineNovelsBlogspot has some unique entries in its Horror/Vampires collection divided into A-K and L-Z.  These are unusual entries not found elsewhere.  Links are offsite and download/viewing options vary from book to book.

ScottSigleroffers a nice collection of short stories and serialized novels for download in PDF.  These are adult works.  Also some audio works available for free listening at Podiobooks or download in iTunes.  Thanks to MrWednesday7 (James) for this.

Web-Books offers 48 free classic horror novels.  These are all available to read free online or for download in WEB and WEB database.  Viewing the downloads requires their Web Viewer (free) which is clean as far as I can tell

WorldWideSchoolLibrary  has a good size collection of classic horror novels available for online viewing.

Horror/Ghosts/Gothic (Audio)

AudioBooksForFree (Horror-Thriller) offers 209 free audio books for free.  However the free download is only available for bearable quality (8kBps) and segmented MP3 files.  Some of these works are not what I would consider Horror, but many are and the entries in the sub-categories of Ghosts and Vampires all fit in this category.

AudioLiteratureOdyssey is a site maintained by voice actor Nikolle Doolin.  It has the ghost story/psychological thriller Turn of The Screw available for download in very good quality MP3.

BooksShouldBeFree A very nice and large collection of  classic horror and ghost novels featured for free download in MP3.  They also provide links to text versions of the works.

Cthulhu is a horror podcast inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and Cthulu Mythos.  This site is listed thanks to MrWednesday7 (James).

FreeMP3AudioBooks has three works by Edgar Allan Poe: The Masque of the Red Death; The Tell-Tale Heart and The Raven available for download in MP3 or as a Zip.

LibriVox has a good number of free audio books available for download in MP3 (64kb/128kb) or ogg vorbis.  All are human read.  This is a very nice collection, including the collected public domain works of H.P. Lovecraft.

Lit2Go has 5 classic works under search keyword term Horror available for download in very good quality MP3.  They are also available for online reading.  These works are Dracula, Frankenstein, Picture of Dorian Gray, Tales of Terror & Mystery and a collection of Poe's works. 

PodioBooks has a very interesting collection of 20 free audio books These are available for download in very good quality MP3..  These books will not be found at the other free sites here.
