Introduction

This is a listing of 67 sites that legally offer free computer and internet related ebooks, for reading.

There is a separate listing of free audiobooks in this genre:

All of these sites listed have content that is legal for them to distribute and for you to download and/or read.  If you find that any site listed is offering content that can not be legally transferred, please let me know in the comments below. 

Also, I would appreciate it if you would post comments about any sites that you like or do not like so that information can be added to the site's listing here.  This would help new users to decide which sites to try.

This list is not comprehensive and if you know of any other sites please post in the comments below or at our forums.

Computer/Internet Books (Reading)

2020k (Computers&Internet) large collection nicely sub-categorized links to downloads in varying formats.  Note:  Most of the links here are working, but there are a number that lead to BookRags, which are not free anymore.  Unfortunately, there is no way of telling where the link goes until you click the link.  Since they did fix the issue with archive.org links, hopefully they will fix this. Thanks to Marie99 for pointing this out.

AllPDFBooks  has 19 computer books for free download in PDF.

BookBoon has 60 free books in its IT & Programing category available for free download in PDF without registration.  You do have to provide an email address (nothing is sent) and answer 3 questions to get the free download.  All the books are available in one zipped download.

BookYards (Computers) small collection of sub-categorized books available for download in PDF.

BusinessBookMall  has a large collection of computer textbooks available for download in PDF.

Calibre Open Books has 9 free ebooks in its Computer/Software/Internet category.  Download and viewing options vary as these are links offsite.  These are recent works, not classics

Centsless Books monitors Amazon (USA) for the top 100 free ebooks in the Computers & Internet genre.  Updated hourly.

ChestofBooks (Computer)  4 books available for online viewing

ComputerBooks.us larger collection, subcategorized and available for download in PDF.

Daily Artisan has links to a good number of free ebooks and guides regarding Linux and some distros.  The links are offsite, so download and viewing options vary.

David J Eck offers his ebook, Introduction To Programing Using Java , for free reading online and free download in PDF without registration.

David MacKay offers his ebook, Information Theroy, Inference and Learning Algorithims, for free download in PDF without registration.

DevelopNew a good collection of free computer software books available for reading online.

DigiLibraries has 32 free ebooks in its computers category.  Most are available for free download in PDF, MOBI and EPUB, as well as free reading online.

eBookDBhas over 100 free ebooks in its computers & IT category.  Download and viewing options vary, but most appeared to be available for free download in PDF.

eBook Junkie has 100 free ebooks in its Computer & Internet category available for free download in PDF without registration.

eBookLobby  has about 150 free computer & internet related ebooks available for download in pdf.

EBookOffline Bills itself as "Your ultimate source for free Computer Referencing online" and it certainly appears to be that.  A huge collection of links in a wide variety of categories.  Since the links are offsite, download and viewing options vary.  Looks to be an excellent site for learning programing in a wide variety of languages.  Thanks to WeaverBird for this suggestion.

eBooksDirectory  has about 200 books in its computers & internet category.  These are further divided into 15 sub-categories and are available for download in varying formats.

eBooksForAll has 109 free books in its computers category.  These are divided in to 12 sub-categories  All are available for free download in PDF.

eBooksFreeNet has 10 free books in its computer category available for free download in PDF.  These are a sociological look at computers and the internet as opposed to technical works.

eBooks On Everything has 12 free ebooks in its Computers & Internet category.  All are available for free download in PDF without registration.

ElegantSolutions has 6 free books in their Computer category.  All are available for free download in LIT (Microsoft Reader).

eServer Technical Communications has 875 works in its software section and 161 in its web design section (although a number were no longer available) as well as some articles in its other sections.

Free Book Centre links to thousands of ebooks divided into many sub-categories.

Free Books Hub UK monitors Amazon (UK) for limited time free ebook offerings.  This link is to offerings tagged Computer.

Free Book Zone has a large collecion of computer related books in 13 computer related categories and various sub-categories beneath each of those.  Download and viewing options vary.

Free eBook Download Links has a very nice size collection of links to free computer science books online.  Download options vary as these are links to other sites.

Free Ebooks Blog has an interesting collection of free ebooks listed.  Download and viewing options vary, but all are available for free without registration.  This link is to the Computers & Internet page.  There also are Web Marketing and Web Design sections.

Free eBooks Daily monitors Amazon's limited time free ebook offerings in the Computers category.

FreeProgrammingeBooks has a very large collection of programming ebooks in 33 categories available for free.  Most are available for download in pdf.  Others for viewing online.

FreeSoftwareBooks has a large collection of links to free ebooks and tutorials in a wide variety of categories.  Many of the links are to older works, but still worthwhile.  Some of the links have expired, but most still are working.  Since the links are offsite, viewing/download options vary.

FreeTechBooks - Computer science and programming books, textbooks and lecture notes.

FreeTechnologyAcademy offers free ebooks for download in editable doc format as part of their learning modules.  If you want to learn about Linux and free software, this is a good place to start.

GetFreePdf has 7 free books in its computer science category and 5 free books in its computer programing category.  All appear to be available for free download in PDF and some are available in other formats (offsite links).

Green Tea Press has a dozen of their books for free download in PDF or free reading online.  These appear to be quality texts.

Hundred Zeros UK monitors Amazon (UK) for free ebooks in the Computers & Internet genre.

InPictures is not an ebook site, but it is worthy of inclusion here as its free tutorials based upon pictures is a great start to learning the various features of Microsoft Office, Open Office, Web Layout and Web Programming.

In-Tech  offers 80 full length books for free download in pdf (zipped).  Large selection on the topic of robotics.  There are also about 2000 journal articles available here for free.

KingZone  has a very nice size collection of free ebooks available in 13 categories (programming languages) for reading online or download.  The vast majority are for reading online.

Kobo has a large number of free ebooks and the best way to find them is to conduct a search and filter the results with Free Only.  This link is to a search for "computer" and has over 900 results.  More could be found using more specific terms.  Many of the results are recently published ebooks.

LinuxDocumentationProject offers a good number of free guides, manuals and howtos on Linux related materials.

ManyBooks (Computer) 52 books available for download in a variety of formats

MemoWare (Computers) 758 writings available for download in varying formats.

MicrosoftPress has 10 free full length books on various Microsoft software available for free download.  All appear to be available in PDF and some may be in other formats.  Thanks to Rob Schifreen here at Gizmo's for this hot find.

MSDN Blogs   offers a free copy of the book, Introducing Windows 8:  An Overview for IT Professionals, Final Editiion, for free download in EPUB. This from a post of Rob Schifreen here at TSA.

oBooko has 4 free books in their Computers and Internet category.  The ones I looked at were PDF in zipped files.  Free registration is required, but no spam at all received by me.

OnlineComputerBooks - Good selection of free computer books in a wide variety of categories.

OnlineFreeeBooks (Computer,Programing,Technology) nice collection divided into sub-categories for download mostly in pdf.

Online Programing Books has a good size collection of free computer programing books nicely divided into many subcategories.  These are links offsite, so download and viewing options vary.

O'Reilly has an open books project where some of the books were created as open source and others have been added as they are no longer in print.  While most are older, there is still a good deal of relevant information here.

PlanetPDF has 5 free works in its Developer books section available for free download in PDF.  Some of the books are available in several editions for free.

ProgrammingeBooks has a very nice collection of downloads and links for a wide variety of programming languages. 

RealTime - Free media for IT professionals

RobertSchifreen has made his new book "The Web Book", which covers everything involved in setting up a website available exclusively to visitors here at Gizmo's.

Ross Anderson of Cambridge, offers his ebook, Security Engineering, for free reading online without registration.  This textbook is used in 3 courses at Cambridge and course materials are also available for free download in PDF without registration.  Thanks to twn for this resource.

ScienceBooksOnline  has a large listing of links to computer science books available for download in its computer science category.  Since these links are off site, download options vary, but most seemed to be in PDF.

Shriram Krishnamurthi of Brown University offers his ebook, Programing Languages:  Application and Interpretation, for free download in PDF or free reading online, without registration

StephaneDucasse offers 30 free computer related books for free download in PDF.  One of the links I checked was not working, but the others I checked were working.  Apparently, these are works that are out of print and permission was obtained to keep them alive for free downloads.

TechBooksforFree offers a wide range of free programming and computer books divided into nine main categories. 

TechToolBlog  offers links to 345 free online computer programing books.  Since these are links off site, download options vary.

The Global Text Project has about 35 free ebooks in their Computing section.  All are available for free without registration.  A mix of PDF and online viewing.

Tutorials & Training has a good number of links to computer related resources around the web.   Some interesting items here and the site is still maintained.  Download and viewing options vary as the links are offsite.

WH Smiththe links here all lead to the Kobo site for me, but that may be because I reside in the USA and this is a UK site.  They do offer categories that the Kobo site does not and that is why it is listed here.  Free registration is required at the Kobo site.  All are available for free download in EPUB.

WikiBooks has a nice collection of works in its computer category available for free reading online.

WitGuides (internet&Computers) 84 works available in PDF download (zipped)

As of May 24, 2012, all links have been checked and are working.

7 new sites were added. 2 sites were removed (dead links) and the link for 1 site was fixed.

I tried the bestbooks link for an Access book,
got some pop-ups (apparently I'm a winner) and ended up at icefile.org, still no sign of the book, more pop-ups, gave up, be easier to write my own book.

The downloads were working properly when I first added the site, but it looks like it has turned into a spam site.

I tried one and got icefile and on another I got an office supply site.

Edit: After re-checking the site, it appears that one of the sites they link to has become a spam site. Many of their links still work. In fact, several of the links to books on Access are legitimate. I have written the site to remove the spam site links and if they do I will add them back in.
