Introduction

This is a listing of 155 sites that legally offer free comic books and/or graphic novels online for viewing and/or download.

All of these sites listed have content that is legal for them to distribute.  If you find that any site listed is offering content that can not be legally transferred, please let me know in the comments below.

FREE COMIC BOOKS ONLINE

Achewood This strip has been running since October, 2001.  Not really sure what it is about.

AdventuresOfSpawn Spawn X, the Redeemer and the robotic Omega Spawn team up to fight the evil Mammon, Overkill, Cy-Gor & Tiffany and prevent them from obtaining the 13 relics of ruin.  Available for online viewing in JPEG are the preview and 2 issues.

Airship Entertainment 4 strips, one active and three done.  All available for free reading online.

AlphaShade has 4 comic series.  These vary in length.  Not sure if they are still ongoing.  Some are multi-frame color and some appear to be black and white.

AlterMeta is a multi-frame color web comic that has been running since June, 2009.   A story of "sex, dragons and rock & roll."

Amazon has 100 free graphic novels in its Comics & Graphic Novels category available for free download.  Free registration, with credit card information, is required.  This link is the USA site.  See the Places For Free Kindle Books Online page here at Gizmo's for information to help find further free ebooks at Amazon.

AndyRunton offers some of his "Owly" comic books for download in pdf and some mini-comics for online viewing as GIF.  These are children's books, but also have appeal to adults.

AppleGeeks3.0 Looks to have been running for 10 years and still active.  Not sure what it is about, but the quality looks good.  Available for online viewing.

ArchiveOrg has 2,870 items in its Webcomics Universe collection. These all appear to be comic books from the 1930s and 40s and are available for free download in a variety of formats and also for free reading online.

BBC Cult BuffytheVampireSlayer Ecomics 11 full Buffy  ecomics for reading online.  Can be saved as jpeg one page at a time.

BBC DrWho Writer's Comics 10 Dr. Who comics for reading online through flash player.  These appear to all be only 5 or 6 pages long.

BlankIt Presents the comic strip, Well what would you do.  This has benn running since 2008 and is still active.

BookRix has 120 free ebooks in its Comics & Graphic Novels category.  All are available for free reading online or free download, which looks to vary between EPUB and PDF.  No registration necessary.   These are unique unpublished authors works.

Bookwyrms A strip that started back in June, 2002 and appears to be still running. Well drawn strip appears to be the adventures of two ladies in a mythical land.

BorderWalker Apparently this site has not been updated in quite some time, but there are still 10 comic series available for online viewing (and saving as jpeg).  The ones I looked at were no more than 3 chapters long with 6-7 pages each chapter.

BrendanCahill features the flash based web comic, "Outside the Box" for online viewing.  Interesting graphics and display and an entertaining run.

Bunny  A single frame comic that has been running from 2004 to at least June, 2012.

B Western Comic Books huge collection of links to movie, TV, radio and pulp fiction American western character comic books that are now in the public domain.

By The Saints as far as I can tell, this is the story of some fox-like individuals fighting a war in a fictional universe.  Long running strip, started in August, 2004,  and appears to be still running.

CaptainConfederacy An alternate reality tale written some 20 years ago available for online viewing as JPEG at the site or the site has link to download at Internet Archive as CBZ.  The second series of this was apparently published by Epic Comics and featured the first black female superhero with her own series.

Centsless Books monitors the top 100 free ebooks in Amazon's (USA) Comics & Graphic Novels section on an hourly basis.

Cetiya An ongoing fantasy comic that has over 200 pages already.  Nicely illustrated story.

ClanoftheCats is an urban fantasy about a witch in New York, who also changes into a black panther when under stress.  This has been open since 1999, so there is a good storyline running.

ClearBits has 5 graphic novels available for free download in pdf.  These are available only as torrents, but there is a link to use of BitLet an online torrent application that requires now download or intall of software (does require Java).

ClintHollingsworth has 3 of his web comics available for free online viewing.  Two appear to be ongoing, with one of thhem running for some time.  The other is a completed story that is no longer updated.  There appear to be some other offerings here also, though not as complete as the 3.

Code Name: Hunter our world today, where magic and myths, returned as reality during World War II.  This is the story of the agency charged with trying to keep things from going out of control

ComicBookPlus An UK site very similar to DigitalComicMuseum below, but appears to have some varied entries.  From my quick look there appeared to be over 7000 files available for download.  All files are public domain comics.  Free registration required.

ComicDomination has a large collecion of comic stories available for online reading.  Searchable by category.  A full listing of the comic stories featured is here.

ComicGenesis A huge collection of web comics for free online viewing.  Searchable alphabetically and by category.  There is also a wiki with information on each comic.

ComicWeb About 20 old time (1930s to 1950s) comics available for free online viewing as pdf.  One link I checked was dead, but it appears most all still available.  Also old time radio podcasts available for free.

CosmicHellcats this comic runs from May, 2008, through the present. 

CowBoy The comic adventures of a 10 year old cow boy.  Thanks to Anonymous Doug for this one.

Crimson Dark a scifi web comic set in the 27th century during a inter-stellar war.  It focuses on a handful of individuals caught up in the conflict.

Ctrl+Alt+Del features 2 running stories for free viewing online.  The first is a color strip, primarily dealing with video game humor, is the also the site name and has been running since 2002.  The other is a black and white strip called the Sillies.

DarkHorse The MySpace page of DarkHorse offers 144 comics separated into 36 issues (4 comics each) for online viewing in flash.  Stories and graphics appear to be very good, but I had a hard time centering in my screen.  Last updated July, 2010.

Diesel Sweeties a world where humans and robots coexist and date.  The graphics resemble 8 bit video game graphics.  The original web story ran for 8 years and the newspaper story ran for 2 years.  All available for free reading online.

DigiLibraries has 18 unique free works in its Comics & Graphic Novels category.  All are available to read online or download in ePUB and some are also available in PDF.  Thanks to Jonathan Malka for this suggestion.  Note:  Only 5 of these books are acttually graphic novels (the rest are regular print novels), but since these 5 are unique entries, I will leave the link up.

DigitalComicMuseum Huge collection of public domain comics available for download. A quick adding up by me came to over 6000 files available for download.  The ones I checked were either cbr, cbz or rar.  Free registration required.

Dilbert the home website of the comic strip offers every Dilbert strip since its inception in 1989 for free reading online without registration.

DMFA the long running "furry" adventures of Dan and Mab.

Dr. McNinja an online comic book of the adventures of a ninja doctor.   Available for free viewing online.

eBooksDirectory has 2 free works in its Comics & Grap;hic Novels category.  Download and viewing options vary.  There are more than 2 books listed, but only 2 graphic novels. 

eBooksForAll has links to 20 free comics.  Since links are offsite, download and viewing options vary.

ElfQuest has every known ElfQuest tale, over 6500  pages, for viewing online through their flash viewer.  Check out the EQ Timeline before starting.  Excellent quality and a very good viewer.

EpicFail Web comic that has vbeen running since 2009 about epic heroes and their epic failures on epic adventures.

Erfworld offers the fantasy adventure centering around the Battle for Godwin Knob.  Features a wiki for further info.

Exploding Dog  Single frame comic which the artist draws from titles viewers send in.

Explosm features the dark humor of Cyanide & Happiness for free viewing online. the strip has been running since 2005 and is still actively produced.

Faulty Logic A satirical comedy strip where the charters and story keeps changing.  Running since 2007 to at least May 2012.

FlashbackUniverse Has 8 full comic books for online viewing (jpeg) or download in cbr (rared). Also the weekly web comic, Mister Crimson, is available for online viewing (jpeg).

FreakAngels An ongoing comic story updated weekly.  Each episode is 6 pages and they are at episode 126 as of now.  Viewable online as jpeg.  Suggested by ellis-fan.

Free Book Sifter lists both the always free offerings and the limited time free offerings at Amazon (USA).  They also maintain a listing in the Comics & Graphic Novels category.

FreeEBooksBlog has 2 free books in its Comics category as well as 3 free works in its Cartoon category.  Download and viewing options vary.

Free eBooks Daily  monitors a number of sites for free ebook offerings.  This link is to the Comics/Graphics page.  There is also a Comics/Manga page.  Some are limited time free offerings.

Freefall A web comic strip that has been running since 1998 until the present.

FreeOnlineNovels has 23 free books in its Graphic Novels category.  All are available for reading online and some are available for download.

FuryComics has a very nice collection of classic comics from the golden age of comics.  All are in the public domain.  Definitely worth a look if you like the oldies. Features over 300 titles and over 2500 issues.  No registration required.

GamingGuardians has been running since May, 2000 up to January, 2012.  27 different story lines and quite a fe changes in the graphics.

Garfield The home website of the comic strip offers every strip since Garfield began, back in 1978.  All are available for free reading online, without registration.

Garfield Minus Garfield the famed strip sans Garfield that "reveals the existential angst of a certain young Mr. John Arbuckle".  All done with the blessing of the Garfield creator, Jim Davis.

Geek Punk offers the first issue of Armarauders: The last Battalion for free reading online or free download in PDF without registration.

GetFreeEBooks is a blog like listing of free books available on the web.  Their Comics category has 4 posts linking to 47 free comics/graphic novels online.  Download and viewing options vary.

GiantInThePlayground has the web comic, "The Order of the Stick" available for viewing online as GIF.  There are 779 pages.  Suggested by SimonC

GirlGeniusOnlineComics has the comic version of Girl Genius viewable online as JPEG.  There are 10 volumes available for free viewing.

GirlsWithSlingshots is a multi-frame color web comic that has been running for 1159 entries.  Interesting series.

Goblins started out as a block and white webcomic and now is a multi-frame color webcomic updated every Tuesday/Friday.  It has been ongoing for a while as there are 4 books worth in the archives which go up to February 15, 2011.  So you have to go back a bit on the main page to keep in order.  Suggested by MrWednesday7 (James).

GoComics Not comic books, but an unbelievably through listing of comic strips from beginning to end (which could be considered a book).  These are viewable online as GIF.  Registration is not required to views, but the free registration will allow some other features. 

Gone With The Blastwave  The story of two soldiers in a post nuclear war world.

Graphic  India has 9 free unique comic books available for free reading online.

GraphicSmash has a large listing of comic series available for online viewing as JPEG.  Click on the "Comics" link at the top of the page for complete listing.  These appear to go to the latest release, so click on "Table of Contents" at the release page to go to start.

GravitywellProductions 8 different comic books series for online viewing in jpeg.  Half have only one issue, the others have several issues.

HarkaVagrant I am not even sure what the real name of this site is, but it does have a large collection of web comics.  Getting around is difficult and there does not look to be an easy way to get back to the begining of stories.  The archives by category is another way to get around the site.

HeartShapedSkull presents the adventures of Serenity Rose and friends and others in some unique ramblings that I found interesting.

Heroes NBC offers a large collection of comics based upon the TV show for online viewing in their flash player.  There are 173 chapters.

HeroesInc a World War II based strip that appears to have run from March, 2009 until July, 2011.

HiddenRobot offers the first two issues of Cross Bronx Online for free viewing in JPEG.  I did not get all the way through to see how many pages, but there seems to be a good bit of content in these two issues.

Hobotopia features the one frame webcomic "The laugh out loud cats".  The main link here leads to the archives, which do not include the latest releases (if you want to go in order.from the archives go to April, 2010 on the latest).  Suggested by MrWednesday7 (James).

Holocrash this well drawn sci fi story has been running since September, 2009.  Adult material.

IKKI Online manga magazine featuring 13 manga series for online viewing in their flash viewer.  I had some trouble with getting the flash viewer to properly show the pages, but that may just be me.  Click on the "Series" button.

Indefensible Positions a 14 chapter color comic story available for free reading online.  Myths and magic are real in our modern world.

InHuman  a dark sci fi comic that has been running for a long time (over 400 pages).. Very interesting graphics.

JohnnySaturn is a very professional looking multi-frame color web comic that has been running since January, 2006.  it is on the 14th book.  Has that classic American superhero comic feed.

JollyJacks offers 3 different strips for viewing online.  One seems to be an ongoing venture.

Keenspot Hosts about 60 web comics for free online viewing.  Entries look to be high quality.

Kevin & Kell the story of a wolf and rabbit, who fell in love and married.  Running since September, 2005.

KyokiPress offers 7 comic series by Kaichi  for online viewing as GIF.

Lovecraft EZine has links to 3 free graphic novels based upon H.P. Lovercraft works.  These are all available for free reading online.

Malakhim a well drawn mythical strip that ran for 223 pages.

MarchansenStuff offers 20 issues of the Ralph Snart Adventures for free viewing online.  Click on the arrow in the upper left corner to see all available.  Thanks to Marc Hansen for this.

Meanwhile a story that does not move in a linear path, it moves off into many directions, giving you a choice on which path to travel.  A black and white comic story.

MegaTokyo  is the long running story of two American gamers who travel to Tokyo on a whim and can not affor to come home.

MeleeComics 7 unique comic book series available for online viewing as GIF.

Mobile9 Several hundred comic books available for  free download in EPUB.  Looks to be an excellennt collection from the few I looked at.

ModernTales Most of the comics here appear to be strips, but there are also some downloadable comic books.  All are unique and original.  Nice size collection.

Mother Goose & Grimmnot quite sure what this is about, but it has been running since January, 1994.

Munsey's offers the graphic novel, "The Clock Strikes" for free download  for Sony reader (LRF).

NeonDragonArt offers the archives of two free stories for online reading.  (the stories are no longer updated).

NextGenesisComics Looks to be 5 running comic stories for online reading as well as a few free downloads.

Newsarama nice size collection of varied comic books for online viewing through their viewer as jpeg.  I was not sure if this page listed all free and full comics so I will also post the search page for free and full.

Novel Graphic Novels has 3 unique graphic novels for free reading online.

Nuklear Power 5 comic stories available for free viewing online. Some unique ideas and interesting storylines.

NYC 2123 has 6 complete issues of this acclaimed web comic, for free reading online or free download in JPG (zipped) without registration.

OnlineComics boasts of access to 7,635 comics online.  The ones I looked at linked off site, so viewing/download options probably vary, but the ones I saw were all viewable online in JPEG.  Searchable by genre, style and format.

Outside The Box  the full series for free viewing online as a flash based color comic.  Kindo of a cross between a semi-motion comic.  Very interesting.

ParadigmClutch offers 2 comics which appear to be ongoing, though not for that long.

PennyArcade Online comic strip that started back in 1998 and is still running.

Pon & Zi  Single frame comic about two "emo" charchters.

PvP This color strip, about gaming company employees, has been running for 15 years at 5 strips per week and is still running strong.  All are available for free reading online.

Questionable Content There are over 2400 strips available in this color strip about " romance, indie rock, little robots and the problems people have".  All area available for free reading online.

RealLifeComics this strip has been running since November, 1999.

Red Meat an alternative newspaper strip available for free online viewing.  Not sure what it is about, but the humor is dark, which is OK with me.

Running With A Gun   Comic noir that is at 57 pages as of this listing.  Updated on Modays.  Thanks to Michael Grills for this site.

ScaryGoRound has the web comic Bad Machinery, which has been running since 2009,  for free viewing online.  Looks like another comic will be starting July, 2012.

Shifters An web comic that has quite a few completed stories for free online viewing.

SluggyFreelance is a black and white web comic that has been running since 1997.  Appears that the format has changed at least once over that time.

Smack Jeeveslarge collection of active webcomics.  Seems to be a wide variety of genres, but no way to sort by genre.  There is a completed section and free registration does allow you to save your favorites.

SMBC Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal is a single pane strip that remind me of the Far Side.  Some dark and funny humor.  Almost 3000 available for free viewing online.

Snafu  A wide variety of independent strips

Station V3  A rest stop and refueling station in an alternate universe.  The color comic strip has been running since 2003 and is still active.

SteveUy has several of his graphic novels available for free online viewing.  The site calls them previews, but it appears the complete works are available.

SuperheroUniverse A unique collection of comic books created by the webmaster and other members.  Original and interesting collection viewable online as jpeg.

Superosity  A full color comedy comic strip that is published 7 days per week for the past 13 years.

The Adventures of Fifinethe long running (since 2000) story of your friendly neghborhood (feline) vixen.

TheBelfryWebComicsIndex Links to about 500 web comics and strips.

TheComicPortal Features a large listing of web comics and comic strips for free online viewing.

The Dreamerthe story of a female high school senior whose dreams of life at the time of the American revolution may be more than dreams.

The Dreamland Chronicles A family friendly fantasy work that has been running for quite some time.

The Duck Webcomics is a huge collection of webcomics.  Really most of these are graphic novels as they are quite long.  An excellent comic resource.

The Golden Years Library A good size collection of public domain comic books with unique entries.  They are available for online viewing in JPG.

The Joy of Tech a color strip with technology related humor, particularly on Apple fanboys.

The New York Times has 6 graphic novels avaialble for free download in PDF.

TheOatmeal A comic strip of random thoughts.  Still active.

ThePeoplesComics Mostly reviews of comics (pay ones), but there are a few comics of "Cecil, the Superpunk".

The Perry Bible Fellowship  A 3 to 4 panel color cartoon that has been running for quite some time. 

The Reset Button  A color comic about the world of video games that has been running since 2006.

TheTopWebComics Offers links and details on web comic sites.  Thanks to Yoav for this link.

ThreePanelSoul A three panel web comic strip that has been running since 2006 and is still active.

Tina's Groovechronicles the personal and workplace adventures of a single, smart, attractive waitress who works at Pepper’s restaurant. Shrewdly self-aware, Tina refutes cliched notions of single women as neurotics obsessed with career or marriage.  Started December, 2005 and still running.

TopWebComics A site dedicated to the promotion of web comics.  It has links to a 3101 web comics and a voting system for fans, by which the comics are ranked.  Suggested by J_L

Tune A web comic that is a "sci-fi slice-of-life romantic comedy adventure of interdimensional proportions" that is now over 300 pages long.

TwoLumps A web comic strip about two cats that has benn running since 2004.

Vendetta An online comic spanning 16 chapters and 720 pages viewable online as JPEG.

VG Cats A web comic of two video gamers who are cats.  There are about 300 strips and it looks to be still running.

WanderingTrials is a fantasy web comic that is still running and has been for quite some time.

WarOfWinds has two web comics for online viewing.  One is a fantasy tale and the other a post apoplytic tale.  These are long running stories and are still being updated,

WebComicGuide has links to over 4,000 web comics.  These are divided into 13 categories.  There is a good description of each web comic along with the link.  I did find a couple of dead links, but the vast majority of links were still working.

WebComicsGuide Has short description of and links to a good number of sites.  The ones I checked were excellent.  There are some other links for free offerings in their Free Online Comics link.

WebcomicsNation Large listing of web comics in a great variety of genres for online viewing as JPEG.  These appear to be works of newer writers looking to gain an audience.  Reviews and "Popular" lists for today and all time can help find interesting works.

WesternCowboyComics An excellent collection of links to classic cowboy comics.  There is a lot of material here.

WhiteNoise A "sci-fi, post apocalyptic, super hero kinda thing"  comic that has 210 pages.  Looks like it is not updated any more.

World'sFinestOnline has quite a few issues of Batman, The Dark Night, for online reading.

XKCD a simply drawn webcomic that starts out pretty basic and evolves over time.  there are 895 entries.  "A webcomic of romance, sarcasm math and language".  thanks to MrWednesday7 (James) for this.

ZombieHighway The people at ZombieHighway have offered up two free "creepy" comic books for Halloween 2010 in pdf.  These are still up, but not sure for how long.

Zortic Appears to be 130 pages of content for online viewing as JPEG.  Navigation is a bit hard as the archive list takes you to the last scene of an Episode.  The link starts on page 2 of Episode 1 Act 1 and you have to scroll down to start and then go to page 2 of that episode and scroll to bottom of page to continue.

ZotOnline is a science fiction adventure that features a unique layout.
