Libraries
On the advice of anonymous poster that most public library systems offer free ebooks, audiobooks, and music downloads to their customers for free, I did some checking and found that there are a large amount of offerings available through online libraries. It appears most, if not all, require a local library card. These are sites that have links to local library sites.
LibWeb is a good search source for local libraries online. A good selection of US and worldwide locations.
Public Libraries very good for US, looked not as thorough as LibWeb on worldwide.
Internet Public Library also has some links, but I found the above two to be superior set ups.

great site !
You might consider adding http://www.kiddierecords.com/.
Thank you. That is an excellent site, but it is in there under Kiddie Records Weekly.
Kids Audio Books has many of the same recordings, but available in one download, while some of the Kiddie Records have to be downloaded in segments.
I have downloaded some of those recordings and they are special.
Steve
I would like to say thank you for the time you have spent putting together this wonderful list of free audio books. I work for a non profit organization which assist individuals with different disabilities who enjoy books. They do not have a lot of funds and the organization does not allow a lot of spending. So again THANK YOU!!
Friends,
Beware that the "Learn Out Loud" website seems to offer mainly "teasers", like only the first chapter of certain books, with the idea of selling you the full book itself. Moreover, many of their "audiobooks" are nothing more than brief lectures, introductions, short speeches, advertising promos, etc. Many of them were probably never even published in print. I wasted many hours there, downloading without first listening.
As for the LIBRIVOX website, most of the recordings are NOT human read, but rather DIGITAL, although perhaps the history section named above has some exceptions. So far, I have found that most of the recordings are digital, and about one in ten are indeed human read.
I have double checked at Learn Out Loud and you are correct. I will add a note in. I also saw that many of the links were to Audible, which no longer offers free works. This site may be removed after I look further into it.
As to Librivox, could you name a non-human read one. I just checked quite a few and they were all human read and that supposedly is their thing as the readers are all volunteers.
Thanks for the info. Your input helps to keep this list updated and relevant.
Steve
Update: I removed LOL as any complete recordings were links offsite and their offerings were just comeons to buy as you said. Overall their listings are just to bait one into their pay items.
Thanks again
This is a really great site. There is so much in it. Thanks.
As of October 17, 2011, 11 new sites have been added and all links have been checked (7 sites removed).
As always, any new sites or comments are welcome.
I appreciate the positive posts that have been put up and thank you.
I am in the process of putting together a "Best Of" listing for this book page, as well as the others. Any comments from you would be helpful in compiling these lists.
Steve

Thanks for adding Miette's Bedtime Story Podcast to your list! I've been at it for many years, and am always happy to consider specific requests if I'm missing something obvious from (what I consider to be) the canon...
And DANG-- I can't believe the size of your collection... there's a boatload of listening here.
xo

Sorry I missed this comment. When updating all the pages I do not go back to updated pages for a while, but still should have caught this.
Thanks for the words on these listings and thanks for putting out your work.
You sure found this link to your site quick.
Steve
Tried the BMW audiobook cite and only got the page with the author comments. Could not get the link to the actual story to open. Can you check and comment. Thanks
The site has audio books. To listen to them, you need to have a podcast software, or you can use the podcast player offered on the site itself. There is a tiny little link of "listen" just below the book titles. You can click that and the podcast will play in the podcast player the site provides.

It has books that can be found elsewhere, but the free audio books are quick to reach and start listening to.
