Introduction
This is a listing of 57 sites that legally offer free audio books, either for online listening or for download.
I compiled this list while creating the article for books to read: 100+ Places For Free Books Online .
Given the large amount of sites and offerings, I am not able to give more detailed information on each of the sites. I would appreciate comments from any of you that use these sites, so that I can add it to the information for that site in the listing.
I have put up separate pages for certain genres that list both audio books and books for reading. Some of the sites listed here, that are not listed on the genre pages, will also have books for a genre but did not have a separate listing.

Libraries
On the advice of anonymous poster that most public library systems offer free ebooks, audiobooks, and music downloads to their customers for free, I did some checking and found that there are a large amount of offerings available through online libraries. It appears most, if not all, require a local library card. These are sites that have links to local library sites.
LibWeb is a good search source for local libraries online. A good selection of US and worldwide locations.
Public Libraries very good for US, looked not as thorough as LibWeb on worldwide.
Internet Public Library also has some links, but I found the above two to be superior set ups.

Your list should include Audio Pod (www.audiopod.ca) They have both free and low cost audiobooks ($10 for 200 hours/month). But the best part is the audiobook technology they have developed. I use audiobooks and never have to manage files, resources, disk space, CD's or anything else. All I do is drag the audiobook by its book cover from the online library and drop it on the audiobook player. Oh, and push the play button, of course. Everything is done for me. Even automatic bookmarks for every open book and table of contents that actually works. These bookmarks are setup so that I can listen at home, then at the office and back again without loosing my place and I don't have to transfer or move anything. I can even send bookmarks by email. But the kids love the illustrated audiobooks best. I guess you could describe it as iTunes on steroids for audiobooks.
Thanks.
They do have a decent amount of free so I will add to list.
http://www.audiopod.ca/audiopod/servlet/AudioPod?ra=RA175
Downside is downloads not compatible with iPod or Zune.
Also their player must be downloaded to try the free offerings.
Since this list is for free offerings I have not checked out other pay sites, so I can not say if their price, features and offerings are good or not.
As a free site it is on the weak side.
And for the Arabic user you can add this site:
As long as you posted this I will figure out a way to post up foreign language audio book sites in the article when I have some time.
I am in the process of setting up genre pages for both audio and print books, so that is going to be taking up my time for a bit. But, I will get to this and post your link in the not too distant future.
From the little at that site that I got interpreted, it looks like it was put up by the Ministry of Education (Riyadh Central Library), so it appears to be legal.
If you know of any other Arabic book sites (read and listen) let me know. They must be legal sites.
Thanks
Steve
In fact it is the work of the Ministry Of Education [The Central library is part of the MOF] in Riad published digitally by Alukah website (Legally and with permission)
that library should be updated weekly as they say, it's tapes being converted to digital :D
there is lots of Arabic online libraries but making sure they are legal is the HardWork :D, I'll try to list legal ones and those that post Ummah Books [old books that are like GPL Software :) (patentless)]
thank you
