Security Product Suggestions

Anti-virus Scanner
For your anti-virus protection we recommend Avira AntiVir, a free, feature reduced version of the powerful commercial anti-virus scanner AntiVir Premium. And it's more than an anti-virus scanner; it offers anti- spyware capabilities as well. Also missing from the free version are web and email scanning capabilities but otherwise it offers the same outstanding protection against virus, worms and other threats.
The lack of email scanning is not a critical loss as AntiVir will still detect email borne viruses should they become active.
These reservations aside, Avira AntiVir offers class leading malware protection for free.
For alternatives to AntiVir, see here. For installation tips click here.
Anti-spyware Scanner
We recommend the free version of Malware Byte's Anti-Malware. It offers fast scanning, superb detection rates and first class infection cleaning. The free version lacks the real-time protection, automatic updates and automatic scheduling of the paid version but the scanner is identical.
To use Malware Byte's Anti-Malware you need to start a scan manually ( called an "on-demand" scan) but that's simple to do. Before you do a scan we suggest you manually initiate an update of the malware signature file to ensure best detection. We suggest you scan your PC at least once a week.
For alternatives to Malware Byte's Anti-Malware see here. For a video covering installation and usage click here.
Firewall
There a relatively few good free firewalls available for 64 bit systems but thankfully there is one outstanding product that is available.
That product is the free Comodo Firewall. This provides outstanding protection against inbound and outbound attacks. However this wonderful protection is only fully realized when Comodo is installed with the "Proactive Defense+" mode enabled. In the default installation, it is disabled.
Despite recent improvements, Comodo still generates a considerable number of security warnings that require user response and to be honest, only very experienced users are capable of responding appropriately. That's why this product is not suitable for average users. Indeed such users may be better off with a simpler, less demanding firewall.

The Most Important Security Advice of all
|
|
The task of protecting your PC from infection is similar to crossing a busy road unharmed. There are two, very different ways of crossing that road: The first way is to be very careful about where you cross and to be watchful and aware of the dangers. In other words, make sure you don't get hit. The other approach is to protect yourself with something like an army tank and cross anywhere, anytime. If you get hit, you rely on the tank to protect you. Now no sensible person would adopt the latter approach to crossing a road, yet when it comes to computer security that's exactly what many folks do. If you want real computer security, you need to adopt safe computing practices rather than rely totally on security products to protect you. No security product or combination of products can or ever will, provide perfect PC security just like no car can provide you with perfect road safety. With both cars and PCs you need to be careful in your own behavior. Like the rules of road safety we teach our kids, the rules for safe computing are simple and well known: 1. Be very careful where you surf. To help you stay away from bad sites install a website rating browser plug-in like WOT and make sure you only visit websites rated "Green" by the plug-in. 2. Never click on email attachments from unknown sources however tempting and attractive such attachments may seem. 3. Only download files from trusted sources. These include:
4. Never install programs obtained from P2P networks including BitTorrent, eMule, LimeWire and others as many of these files are infected with malicious programs. Some of these malicious programs are so powerful they are capable of overwhelming all your security defenses. 5. Never install programs that friends give you on removable media unless you have verified that they are clean by submitting them to free web based file scanning services such as Jotti or Virus Total. 6. Never accept free toolbars, media players or other unsolicited software offered to you by a website. 7. If you are not using Internet Explorer 8 then we recommend you upgrade to this version or better still, switch to an alternate browser such as Mozilla Firefox, Opera or Google Chrome. All these have a track record for better security than Internet Explorer and are arguably superior browsers as well. 8. Seriously consider using a Windows limited user account (LUA) ) rather than a normal account with full administrator privileges. LUA will block the majority of malware. More details here. 9. You should seriously consider creating a fresh installation of Windows and then back up your PC using a drive imaging program. Then if in the future, your PC ever becomes infected you can use the drive image to restore it to a pristine, infection free condition. If you are using the Business or Ultimate versions of Vista/Windows 7 you already have drive imaging capabilities built into Windows. See here for details. If you're using other versions of Vista/Windows 7 you can find a number of free drive imaging programs here. By following these simple rules the chances of your PC becoming infected will be dramatically reduced. Combine these practices with the security software suggested above and you are well on the way to safe, secure, infection-free computing. |

I have been using Comodo, Superantispyware, Malwarebytes, and antevir for years now, even now on my Win 7 - 64 bit pc, I have never had any issues with any, and I do it all online - from torrents to p0rn. As good as most commercial grade combined and for free...
Try OpenDNS fellas as a port security, I think it is the first line of defense and works for me on Win7/64
Comodo froze me up and gave me BSODs on Win7 64 until i reinstalled everything from the ground up...never again.
I think your statement of "Never download P2P programs... including Bittorrent" is a little naive. Torrent's in and of themselves are not the issue. In fact, many Linux distros push you to use only torrents to download their images. Many larger programs use BitTorrent software to help keep the load on servers down. I think your intent is that people shouldn't download unlicensed software or software that is knowingly illegally obtained. I think maybe your wording could use some revision there, other than that, it's a pretty good list.
I have serious problems with WOT but would admit "with WOT" is better than "without WOT."
There's a toolbar addon for Firefox called LinkExtend and ontop of WOT has SiteAdvisor, Google Safe Browsing, Norton etc.
on my windows 7 64bit laptop, i have Norton Internet Security, AVG Security Suite, Malware Bytes and microsoft security essentials. my computer is pretty secure and i have no probs. each have daily scans at 1 hour intervals. window shas automatic uptaes on. so do all the programs. its all good.
2 many security products will cause them to clash with each other
Your security wizard is pretty accurate in my book. I ran it to see if what I have installed is also what your wizard recommends. The wizard recommends Avira anti-virus, I have Comodo, (which I have been very happy with for 3 years). The wizard recommends Malwarebytes Anti Malware, I run Iobit 360 which has been accused of being a clone of Malwarebytes, but Iobit have a habit of coming up with great free software,(I also run Advanced SystemCare and Smart Defrag). The wizard recommends Comodo Firewall with Defence+, this is exactly what I have. Finally, as far as imaging the hard drive goes, I use Macrium Reflect, which is a great free version software for this purpose.
Moderator's Comment: Iobit have an unsatisfactory WOT rating and therefore are not recommended by this site. Any further references to Iobit will be considered spam and deleted accordingly
I have been regural visitor to this website for some time now as well. I used different products in the past but right now I have AVIRA and antispyware installed. I am going to install comodo again to give it a try since I did experience few problems with it in the past (high CPU usage at times - needed to restart). Even though latest AV comparatives show AVIRA rating not as good as before and beaten by eg. AVAST I am stayin with it :).
Thanks for great website with excellent suggestions for tons of free software.
hi, i used comodo too, but now zonealarm is on my pc. try it.
I will like to know if there is any sandbox program available similar to Sandboxie for Windows 7 64 bit OS.
Although not free, Acronis True Image 2010 (ATI) includes a "Try & Decide" mode which is a sandbox isolated in the ATI "Secure Zone" (hidden partition). It works flawlessly for my systems which are running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. On top of the sandbox, you get the highly-rated ATI imaging system to backup your data and disks, clone drives, convert other image formats, cleanup your system and the ability to automatically recover a disk image even when you cannot load Windows.
Often on sale for half price, it is a true bargain and can save your bacon in many, many ways.
NOTE: earlier versions do not work consistently on 64-bit systems.
I tried to find such a program but couldn't find ANY alternatives :(
That was fun! I already use the products suggested (have been a regular visitor to this site for a while now), and have never turned up a serious infection.
I have a LOT of stuff from torrents on my PC, and have had no problems thus far. I try to download such files from sites where users can comment on or rate the files (like the Pirate Bay). If a file is several months old, has a lot of seeders, and has no real negative comments from users...personally I would trust that file almost as much as something I'd get from Softpedia.
So taking the crossing the road metaphor, this wizard says "Never install programs obtained from P2P networks including BitTorrent" ie just don't cross THAT road! It is right that the wizard says this, but in REAL life a little common sense goes a long way.
using avira, superantispyware but as firewall i use pctools firewall
windows 7 x64
i selected vista/windows 7 64bit as os and your wizard suggested "Online Armor" as firewall wich is no compatible with 64bit os, tha's odd.
you should fix that.
i also said vista/win7 64 bit, but it selected comodo for me.
must say though, the internal firewall inside win 7 might be overlooked a bit too fast, they made some really big improvements there.
very good
