Windows Live Essentials 2011 Now Available

Microsoft has released the latest version of its free add-on pack for Windows.  Dubbed Windows Live Essentials 2011, you can download it now from http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials .

Included in the bundle are new versions of MSN Messenger (now able to show you status updates from your Facebook friends too), Photo Gallery, Windows Movie Maker, Windows Mail (Outlook Express as was), Writer (for uploading content to blog sites such as wordpress.com and blogger), Family Safety (additional parental controls), and Windows Live Mesh.

Live Mesh, formerly known as Live Sync but now reverting to the original Live Mesh moniker, is Microsoft's answer to systems such as Dropbox, for syncing files between multiple computers.  You get 5 GB of space for free, and one nice touch is that it can automatically sync your MS Office settings and IE favourites as well as standard document files.

Personally, I can't see why Microsoft doesn't continue to bundle these apps with Windows, as they used to in the days of XP, rather than making them available as additional downloads.  Still, there's a useful selection here.  The stand-out winner is Movie Maker, which, while not quite able to match the speed or features of a professional video editing package, is a supremely useful tool for editing and tweaking clips in just about any format, ready to upload to your web site or Youtube.

Windows Live Essentials 2011 requires Vista or Win7 (there's an older version for XP at http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-xp).

Be aware that, although the file listed above is only 1.5 MB, this program merely asks you to select your required applications.  These are then downloaded and installed, and will ultimately require a download of up to 150 MB if you choose all the items in the suite. So if your broadband package is capped, but allows unlimited downloads overnight, you might want to consider a nocturnal browsing session.

I am new to WLE. I started to use Windows Live Photo since last week. Whenever I start it up, a massage appears and says update is available. The update is worth trying? I just don't want my PC to get messed up due to updates.

Hi,
long time ago I played with a microsoft software called Group Shot ( http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/groupshot ). This software is not longer available/working.
I have read that with Microsoft Live Essentials there should come a function call "Photo Fuse" that can do the same thing or even better.

Does anybody know where to find this "Photo Fuse" thing in Live Essentials?
Maybe I am blind but I cant find it :-)

Thanks

The 155MB fully-offline installer can be downloaded from:

Direct file downloads are not allowed.

DesELMS edit: Oh, yeah... I forgot about that. Sorry. Well, that's too bad because it would have allowed the entire 155 megabytes worth of "Windows Live Essentials 2011" to be downloaded to the local hard drive, from which any part(s) thereof could then be installed as desired, but without any further downloading.

But it's cool to do it the other way, too... the way wherein one downloads the little 1.5MB installer, and then selects from it what one wants to install, and then only what's selected gets downloaded. That'll work just as well...

...and that's the method linked-to in the article.

Six of one is a half-dozen of the other, as my 'ol man used to say.

Either way, I must confess that as much as I kinda' don't like much of anything in Windows Live Essentials, the new 2011 version is the best one so far. Quite nice, actually.

For whatever that's worth. [grin]

Can someone show the download page (with green WOT rating) for the off-line installer? If it's a direct download link, please replace "." with [DOT] and/or leave some spaces in between.

You can find the link here, as well as for other languages too.
