Wikipedia, Reloaded

What could be better than Wikipedia? How about adding videos, maps, photos, diagrams, and content from Google, Yahoo News and Google Maps?

That's exactly what VisWiki does. VisWiki defines itself as "a visual, intuitive, and interactive web interface to encyclopedic knowledge/information."

What it doesn't mention is how much fun it is to use.

When you click on a topic, all the information available is organized on one page. The top section contains a description of the topic. Using your mouse to hover over any terms that are highlighted in blue will pop up a definition of the term.
Related information is shown in bold with a plus sign that when clicked drops down an article.
Next up is a cloud tag, filled with links relevant to the topic.
After that you get an amazing diagram with links to connected topics.

At the bottom of each page there are videos from YouTube, and links to other services that offer additional context - Google, Yahoo News and Google Maps, to name a few.
The right hand pane contains even more information - related photos in a slide show, a video, a section on additional Page Catergories, a section with links to recommended articles, and a link to see content in other languages.
The main page is a treat, with a Featured article, a "Did You Know", a section on In The News, a Featured Picture.......you get the idea.

The site, which is unaffiliated with the Wikimedia Foundation, creates an astounding amount of contextual content around Wikipedia articles. Its a knowledge lovers paradise.

Thanks Rhiannon (& Gizmo)! This'll keep me wandering aimlessly for a while. At the risk of ridicule, are there any search engines that are particularly suited to research of a Fortean nature? I often use http://www.newsnow.co.uk/h/ but it's very limited in it's search terms.
Liking your work guys!

I've been interested in a site called Browsys. I've been using the site put together by Fasteagle since it has most everything I would need. You might find it useful as a starting point, or to customizing for your own use.

Cleverly disguised as a responsible Adult !!!

Got it today, Wed. 14th. at 19:00. V. interesting and will no doubt use it from time to time.

This is an amazing site: I'm going to be lost in it for days.

Cleverly disguised as a responsible Adult !!!

Me too - just a blank page, and I was looking forward to trying it out. Never mind; I'll try again tomorrow.

The site is back up and running - have fun!

A big, undisguised, ungrown-up WOW!!!

(PS Thanks Snoop27 and Rhiannon for helping me feel young, which can be important regardless of content!)

I'm guessing the site got more traffic than it could handle for the moment.
I'll keep an eye on it and let you know when it comes back up.

Yep, today is not working, but I saw it yesterday...

Sounds intriguing, but the site currently seems to be down. Anyway, I haven't been able to access it via Google either.

Yep, I also saw that today... I like the alternative layout w/ the freemind gadget a lot, but I think loading times need to be a lot faster.
