Why You Should Be Using Google Voice

What is Google Voice and why should I use it? Get the answer to that and other questions using this guide.

I love Google Voice. I use it to make free long distance calls, but it can do so much more. This is the kind of all-in-one package that should have been part of telephone and communication companies all along.

This site has a very useful guide to Google Voice and how to use its features.
How about free text messages? (no texting while driving please)
Free long distance calls?
How about one phone number that dials any phones you have? (just pick up one of them and answer) Mine goes to a landline and a cell phone.
I'm told the Mobile features are terrific, but I'll leave that for people who use it to decide.
Sadly, Google Voice will not work on iPhones. You'll have to take that up with Apple. :)

Awwww, thanks!

Sadly this technology would be redundant if the British hadn't invented the telephone, computers and the internet!

You cannot send calls to extension phones, at least not yet. Downer if you have a work phone that's an extension.

Please don't hit me....but does it work with dial-up.

by rhiannon on 4. September 2009 - 23:24  (32172)

That's good to know.
Not everyone is on broadband. It wasn't too long ago I was on dial up.
I believed then and still do that too many sites ignore people on slower connections.
The flash ads alone are enough to choke a slower connection.

Since Google Voice is a Google service, its a web based application like gmail or gcalendar.
Technically its still in beta, though you can get an invitation here:

Google Voice

There's a short wait to get an invite back from Google.

by Anonymous on 15. September 2009 - 16:27  (32667)

Could you please define "short wait" - it's been almost a month and I still haven't received my invlite.

by rhiannon on 15. September 2009 - 20:55  (32674)

The invitations started going on in late June, the current wait time seems to be a few days to a week.

Have you checked any spam folders or filtered email to make sure it didn't go there? Just a thought.

If one doesn't show up soon, you can see about requesting another invitation. Email does get lost in translation sometimes. I've sent emails that didn't arrive.

Ah, another offering only for U.S based users. It's disappointing to see large companies still ignoring the Rest Of The World!

by rKAnjEL on 4. October 2009 - 12:35  (33908)

Agreed.

by rhiannon on 4. September 2009 - 3:12  (32124)

I completely agree. There is after all a very large chunk of the planet that's inhabited outside of the USA.....

Google Voice does work with Skype, which is available outside the US.

by FrankO on 4. September 2009 - 10:40  (32138)

I have used Google Talk to chat from South Africa to the USA. It may not be as feature rich as Google Voice, but it does make for good talking when that is all you want to do.

by ChronicChaos on 4. September 2009 - 3:16  (32122)

The U.S. invented it.

They get first use of it!

The US INVENTED IT...LOL..

Where's the download link?
