Video Shows All Versions of Windows From 1.0 To 7

It's 25 years since Microsoft launched Windows 1.0.  If you've never seen some of the early versions, it's fascinating to discover how many similarities still exist, at least visually, between the 1995 vintage and today's releases.

For a quick (9-minute) tour around every version of Windows from 1.0 to 7, you could do worse than to watch the YouTube video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPnehDhGa14 in which someone attempts to install Win1.0 on a machine and then upgrade through every version.

It's a fascinating experiment.  And, it just goes to show how much effort Microsoft puts into ensuring legacy compatibility.  One does have to wonder, though, just how much leaner and meaner Windows could be today if it didn't still have to cater for devices and software that were 20 years old.

Okay, who else out there used a PC pre-Windows? Raise your hands?

As someone who began using MS-DOS and PC-DOS before Gates...um...borrowed from Apple to create Windows, and who has worked with all versions of Windows since 1984, I've never seen much difference between versions except in terms of bells, whistles, and babysitting its users more and more with each release.

Then again, I'm a geek-girl who's both proud and embarrassed to admit I still have a 386 and recently ripped Windows 3.1 off of it. I draft novels on it using WordPerfect 5.1, it doesn't require a mouse, and it stays out of my way. It also doesn't connect to the Internet which is a real plus when I'm on deadline.

That 386 and DOS will still be going when the shiny Windows 7 toy I'm using to write this has been recycled.

I was surprised he could update through all that and keep the remnants.
