Video Download Helper
I happened to find this by accident. I'm glad I did. For online video addicts, there is a great free Firefox extension out there that makes it a simple to download videos and photos from hundreds of sites, with as few as one mouse-click. The extension is called 'Video DownloadHelper'. It is available at www.downloadhelper.net. This extension not only discovers the true source of the video content and initiates a download to the directory of your choice, but also will convert the video format (e.g., flv to avi) in real-time, if you wish.
(Suggestion from anonymous)

I downloaded FLVs from a random Web site (not on the list of media sites supported) using Firefox 3.0.2 without problems--just clicked the drop-down arrow next to the animated icon, and it found the FLV file embedded in the HTML without an issue. Great resource.
Great little program--thanks!
I've just used it a few times (without issues) in Firefox 3.0.2. on a Web site not listed under supported sites. To download an FLV from wherever, go to the page with the video you want and click the little drop-down arrow beside the animated Video Download Helper icon on the Firefox toolbar. You should see the file name of the FLV you're viewing and can click on it to download. If you click the Video Download Helper icon itself, you'll see the list of supported media sites VDH is supposed to work with (none of which I've tried).
It should be noted that Video Downloader is not compatible with the new FF 3.01. This is just one of the few must have addons I am not ready to give up, so I am delaying my upgrade! This downloaded works just fine, by the way.The list of sites supported is very long.
There's a better, easier place, but they are down for a revamp of their site. http://koyote.com/ (I just checked) I am having a great time downloading Youtube videos. I just paste the link in the address bar. I can even convert them after the download automatically, so I can play them on any player. You can also extract the audio.
I am using the extension successfully with FF 3.0.1

I just downloaded a video from youtube using it and it works fine with FF 3.0.1...
I understand the list of sites it covers is rather poor.
Please comment.
It supports all the major video download sites, and many I had never heard of. I didn't make an exact count, but the list contains well over 100 sites. More important, I think, is that it has a medialink option, which allows activation of the download process based on recognition of the file extensions of HTML links within a web page. The following extensions are recognized: jpg, jpeg, gif, png, mpg, mpeg, avi, rm, wmv, mov, flv and mp3. That list covers just about every multimedia format I'm interested in dowloading. So, you really are not limited to a finite set of supported sites. If interested, go to the developer's website if you'd like to see the list of supported sites.
