'USB Safely Remove' is a USB and SATA external drive manager included by PCWorld magazine into "TOP 100 Best Products Of 2008". It solves a bunch of problems encountered by frequent USB and SATA users, for example:
- Shows what processes prevent your device from being stopped
- Lets you reactivate your accidentally stopped hotplug device without reconnecting it physically
- Hides drives of empty card reader slots
And many others, for details see: http://safelyremove.com/fullFeaturesList.htm

I checked this user-submitted item and it accurate. The download file installed clean (according to Avira Pro) on my XP test PC and the product appears to work as advertised. A couple of points worth noting:
1. You may want to uncheck the "Subscribe me on newsletter" (sic) link on the page where you give your details.
2. The site has a notice saying that it may take up to 24 hours to get a license. Certainly it's been several hours since I applied for mine and it still hasn't arrived. You can however install and use the product while waiting for the license.
All up, a pretty useful freebie. Thanks to "mauzer_tim" for posting it.

My apologies if this is the wrong category in which to post this topic but it seemed to be the closest to any I could find! When using a flash drive and wanting to remove it from the laptop the "safely remove hardware" icon in the system tray has disappeared. Any idea why and what can be done to restore it? If not what can I do as a substitute other than booting into safe mode to remove it? Thanks for your reply
To offer assistance with this we would first need some more information.
You will also need to register and post here in the forum so that the editors can respond and keep track of progress.

alway looking forward to this
Doesn't Windows already have a "Safely Remove hardware" feature. Why use this instead?
This program has numerous useful features above that of the Windows offering.
Check it out and see.
USB Safely Remove: The normal price of $20 seems a bit steep for what it does ($10 would be fair), but here it is completely free and is absolutely wonderful!
Thanks!
Hi, thank you very much for this useful programme.
I lost it last week when cleaning up my puter a bit too eagerly, so this recommendation came just in time. It's a must-have when you are using so many USB-drives, sticks, cards...
Again thanks to gizmo and Igor :)

I've been using the free USB Disk Ejector for ages now with no problems on both XP and Vista 32-bit.
Program is available here: http://quick.mixnmojo.com/usb-disk-ejector
and I've just discovered there's a later version available.
I've also been using USB Disk Ejector for ages, but I figured I'd try the SafelyRemove during the giveaway.
Benefits of the USB Disk Ejector over Safely Remove:
- runs as a portable application (no installation required)
- free (of course)
Benefits of Safely Remove over USB Disk Ejector
- can hide drive letters (useful when you've got one of those 5-in-1 that map 5 drives)
- maps to a hot key (if you care about that sort of thing)
- can modify drive labels and etc.
- identifies processes that are using the drive
That last item is what makes this a keeper. I can't count the number of times I've had a drive refuse to detach because it was "in use by a process", where there was nothing obviously using it.
Thanks for mentioning this freeware. Pretty good.
I've an internal card reader with 5 slots and Window Explorer shows five removable disks. If I'm not mistaken, this freeware has no option to hide drive letters when there're no media inserted. Great to know if there's a free alternative to do this.
yeap! same with me. This is a real gem! two clicks and you're done! New version still in beta phase, but seems to have a lot of what this new one have. Will try it anywhay.
thanks for the opportunity to own a great little program.
Thanks, Igor.
Very useful, can't wait to use it on my office Vista machine, if that's allowed.
Does the statement "...you can use it personally on each of your computers" include office machines? I work at a state college and would LOVE to install it on my Vista machine there.
Thanks again!
Yes, you can install the program on each your computer, even on your office machine.

Awesome - Thanks!
Gizmo,
This is a nice little program especially if you have problems disconnecting USB devices which is a real problem with Vista and this program certainly solves it for me. Have used it dozens of times and it just works everytime without issue.
Thanks

Agreed. I'm using XP Pro SP3. Been trying to break it all day and I can't!
Makes a change for new software of this type not to eat parts of your system for breakfast. Excellent.
I used a hotmail email to register, the mail ended up in my junk folder.
If you didn't get the mail within a few minutes, you should try your junk folder, it might be there.
Always a good point to make.
I received my license instantly and had no issues at all installing and registering,
This license is only with the current version 4.1. If you wish to upgrade to any future versions (and even to downgrade to a previous one) you have to purchase the lifetime license.
All other aspects of our license policy will be the same as for paid licenses: you can use it personally on each of your computers.
I got my key within seconds of signing up.
The program seems to work well so far and I'm looking forward to forcing my ext HDD to stop doing whatever the heck it keeps doing so that I can disconnect it when I'm finished with it. :0)
Awesome as ever. Perfect install and key came through in seconds. Cheers!
Repekt!!!
Does this works on Win7 (RC) 64 bits? I'm gonna get this anyway but i just want to make sure.
serial is working without expiration thanks for info :D
Thanks a lot Gizmo, I received My licence key really fast. It installed just fine.
Sweet, I LOVE this program, thanks for the news :)
My licence key also arrived within minutes,.. installed and working OK.
Even though I unchecked the box to NOT subscribe to their newsletters, they signed me up anyway and sent me a confirmation email to that effect. Not to worry,.. if it becomes a problem, I'll just black list it with my spam filter.

Hi Terrawara,
I've just checked the issue you mentioned and didn't find any problems. It seems you forgot to unselect the checkbox... Or it's a tricky bug at our web-site. If anyone encounter this problem please send us a report at support [-at-] safelyremove.com.
Also it's possible to sign out from the link in the sign-in-letter or you can unsubscribe in future once you received a newsletter email from us.

Thanks Igor,. I;m an old forgetful guy (65) so it doesn't surprise me that perhaps I actually didn't uncheck the box. Not reaaly a problem for me,. their newsletter may actually be good reading.
Cheers
There is a link in the confirmation email to de-select the newsletter that you were signed up to automatically. I've used it - let's see if it works! Otherwise I'm with you on the spam filter!
I previously used USBDeview from Nirsoft but this is much more comprehensive. Took a while to get used to the popups but then that's the same with everything new. So far it seems to be excellent - thanks very much.
Used an alternate email address ie mailinator.
Got my key in seconds. Program seems to work fine...
Cheers...Simon
