This Top Windows Tweak Tool is Now Free

If you're the sort of person who likes fiddling with Windows settings, then X-Setup Pro may be well known to you.  It allows you to tweak more than 1900 settings, including those to do with MS Office, booting, internet access, and hundreds more.

Sadly, WUG, the company behind X-Setup Pro, recently became insolvent and ceased operations.  The good news, however, is that the program is now available for free.  Just go to http://www.x-setup.net/ and follow the links.  On that same page you'll also find a serial number that you can use to register the program.

X-Setup Pro

My thanks to user "morrig" for tipping me off about this great Hot Find.  If you have a Hot Find, let me know via http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/submit-product-review.htm.

There's a new message on the x_Setup Pro website:

"You can still download the last version from MajorGeeks or BetaNews. The portable edition and the U3 version are available from MajorGeeks as well.

In case you lost your serial number use this one instead: XSA092-11TA9R-8K12YT"

The download links are:

MajorGeeks: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4083.html
Betanews: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/XSetup-Pro/933525917/1
Portable version: http://majorgeeks.com/X-Setup_Pro_Portable_for_USB_d5565.html
U3 Version: http://majorgeeks.com/X-Setup_Pro_Portable_for_U3_d5564.html

Thanks gizmo. As it happens, that message has always been on the x-setup web site. I just thought that it would be better to quote the official source rather than point people at majorgeeks etc. Robert.

Too bad those guys didn't leave a contribute button on their site.

Funny you should revue X-Setup Pro at this time. I was thinking just recently that I'd see if I could find it again. I had when it was free originally, then bought it when it went commercial. It was on my previous Desktops (both 98 and XP) - until my Home Built - died over two years ago. Since then I'd forgotten all about it, until I got a new Desktop with Windows 7 a few months ago (I hope it will work on 7).
As for stars, since one must evaluate it against its competitors, I'd give it 5 (based on XP). None of the others were worth more than 3 or 4 at most.

Yep thats great but what about all those that paid for it like myself and recently at that...

Hot dang! I was a big fan of this program way back before it stopped being freeware, but kind of gave up on it then. I can hardly wait to see what improvements I've missed over the years!

by Anonymous on 13. June 2010 - 10:49  (52018)

I've used this program for years. It was the ultimate tweaker. I tried this on my windows 7 machine and it works with no problems. I highly recommend backing up your registry first as there is always the chance of a lockout when fiddling with the registry.

Cant connect - is it just me or others.
Looks just what i am looking for.

Downloaded and installed. Haven't played with it as yet but there is a menu item for Windows 7 specifically.

In the menu, without looking around, I love the item titled "virtual paranoia." As I said, haven't really looked around yet.

Somewhere in the process the autors gave the activation key that seems to work correctly. In case you missed that part, the key is ****. During install, it will ask for this key or allow you to continue under the evaluation mode.

All in all, seems like an interesting program.

by Anupam on 12. June 2010 - 16:09  (51985)

I have replaced the key with the stars. Please do not write the activation key here.

Wow. There are many experts here. Speaking of do not understand.
software for windows 7 If you want it go by it. Always, beating a fallen tree. That does not make them experts.
Is better than who made the article, said it does not work for windows 7.
The emulation is good, but we returned to the base functionality.
This software works fine from Windows 95 to Windows XP. Causes some problems with Vista and Windows 7 only windows based structure (contained in all other versions of Windows), YES will which can be modified. Windows 7 aggregates may not be modified.

Is an excellent program.
If you are not an expert, is best used with the "safe" mode enabled. To prevent further disasters.

Highly recommended because, most of the planet still has a computer with XP or Vista. And in some nations (Not inferior Not superior) have PCs with Windows 98 SE and need a good software like this. Do you watch as it is not necessary to denigrate the functionality of the software to give a technical opinion true?

Majorgeeks lists that it's compatible with "Win9x/NT/200x/XP/Vista". Nothing about Win7.

by ssoundman on 11. June 2010 - 8:40  (51894)

Thanks, r.schifreen and morrig.

Has anyone tried this on Win7 yet? I have a VM set up but it's for XP.

Thanks.

by morrig on 15. June 2010 - 15:35  (52171)

Your welcome
When I come across this I noticed no Win7 so tried and everything seemed ok so then posted on Gizmo.

by Anonymous on 12. June 2010 - 12:33  (51973)

I installed this in Win 7 x86 & x64 in VM Ware. It installed with no problems and there are some WIN 7 specific settings for the start menu.
I haven't tested any functions yet, give it a whirl, seems ok.

It works but it hasn't been updated in awhile and, judging from the website, since the developer is bankrupt it probably won't be. There's nothing specific to win7.
