System Restore not working

Recently I tried to do a system restore, but got a dialog box saying "System Restore Application has encountered a problem and needs to close" Get the same message when trying to check status from Computer Properties box.Went to Start,Run, typed services.msc., shows automatic and enabled. From Control Panel, same message. Tried to install sr.inf from installation disk. Would not respond. Worked fine 3 days ago when I created  a restore point, but now I can't even get to it to roll back system. About to erase drive and do complete re-install. Will not even accept data from 2nd. partition. HELP.That is too time intensive and rough on my hair.( I keep pulling it out) . Any suggestions appreciated.

try scanning your computer for any viruses or malwares with updated antivirus in safe mode, then delete all detected items. then try again your system restore.
I understand most of viruses and malwares these day are also infecting the restore files.

so be careful with your restore point.

Sorry to take so long. Been busy. Tried Safe Mode. Went to last known good configuration. System Restore still not working. Next?

Went to Safe Mode, Last Known Configuration. When tried System Restore, would do nothing. Did not even get box like before. Went to Computer Properties to look at status of System Restore and System Restore was not at top left corner where it had always been. Gone completely now.HELP.

Already tried that. No go. Even in Safe mode it gives the same message. I run with Comodo Firewall, Avira AntiVir, SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, WinPatrol,SuperAntiSpyware, and WindowsDefender. Only new programs installed came as "critical" Windows updates. Those were Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. Restore worked fine until they came to town.Rolling IE7 back to ^, and removal of "tool" did not help.

When you reboot push F8 as it starts. You will get a window with a number of options. Go to the one that has something like "Reboot to last good version" or some wording similar to that. That will return it to the last boot up without problems.
