Searching for Torrents (Torrent Search Sites)
Introduction
There is a great deal of content available in bittorrent. There is over a PetaByte of content available in 3 milliion plus active torrents. Finding the content you want within all that is what these torrent search sites are about.
If you do not know what bittorrent is, see What is Bittorrent?. The first step is getting a bittorrent client and setting it up properly (Best Free Bittorrent Clientand Optimizing Bittorrent Clients for Speed). The next step is finding the content you want, which this article hopes to help with.
This article lists public torrent search sites, which do not require registration. There are many private torrent search sites. The best place to look for information on those is the articles at FileShareFreak .
Used properly, bittorrent is one of the safest ways to transfer content. The torrent file contains metadata about the files to be shared and the bittorrent client checks content received against this metadata. If there is any difference, the content received will be discarded. This means that malware cannot be added to a torrent after it is active and that any data that is damaged in transmission will be discarded and re-downloaded.
Torrent Search Site Features
There are two features of these sites that will be discussed here. Comments and Ratings help avoid fakes and scams. Sorting helps to find the healthiest torrent for the exact content you want. All of these sites have features to show the files the torrent contains. Many of these sites have ads, but none are overwhelming and none have popups. Sites without ads will be noted in their description.
Comments and Ratings
To avoid malware, fakes and scams in torrents only download torrents where the comments or ratings indicate the content associated with the torrent is clean and real. As stated above, the content associated with a torrent can not be altered once it is active. So the comments and ratings can be relied upon to find a good torrent. Each torrent has a unique ID called an Info Hash. This Info Hash can also be used to find information on the torrent.
Sorting
Sorting is used primarily to find the healthiest torrents. There is no way to know for certain which torrent is faster as the download speed depends on the upload capacity off the other users. The best indicator is the seed to peer ratio on the torrent. The higher that ratio, the more likely it is that the torrent will be faster. For more info on this, see Good Torrents. Sorting by seeds, peers (leeches) or "health" is helpful for this. (personally I find the "health" sorting to be somewhat inaccurate and prefer sorting by seed numbers)
Sorting can also be helpful to find the exact content you want, which is where sorting by date, name, size and category can be helpful.
At a visitor's request, I have added information on those sites that offer magnet links. Sites with a
offer the alternative of a magnet link. For those of you who prefer, or need, magnet links the GreaseMonkey script Magnet Catcher will show magnet links even at sites that do not offer them. I have tried this and it was successful on most sites.
Torrent Search Site Listings: Popular and Unique
This listing is divided into two parts. The Popular listing is of the sites that are used by many people. These sites have large listings of torrents and good comments and ratings systems along with various sorting features. Most of the time, you will find the content you are looking for at these sites. The Unique sites are less popular, but have unique features that make them worth using in certain searches.
Warning: Although each of these sites has legally distributable content, they also contain a good deal of copyrighted content which is not legally distributable. While bittorrent file sharing technology is legal, the unauthorized distribution of copyrighted content is not. Obtaining copyrighted content through bittorrent may result in civil and/or criminal legal actions. This may result in fines of many thousands of dollars per download.
Popular Torrent Search Sites
These are sorted alphabetically as they are all good sites to search at:
BitSnoop is a fast search site that indexes over 2 million torrents. They have very good sorting features and recently enable comments and ratings. They also feature TrackerMatch, which adds any additional trackers to a torrent. this can help speed as it will find additional seeds/peers quickly. They also respond quickly to suggestions. I noted in the comments below about their lack of comments/ratings and shortly thereafter comments/ratings were added to their site. This site has a lot going for it and is worth checking out. ![]()
Comments and Ratings: They have both comments and a rating system. They appear to be fairly well used.
Sorting: by TorrentScore, age, health, size, seeders. leechers and peers (seeds/leechers combined total)
btjunkie.org is a comprehensive search engine that lists over 4 million torrents from its own trackers and other trackers. It also lists torrents from a large number of private trackers, which can be good or bad. The private torrents are indicated by a lock image on the search results. Again, "bad" torrents are not removed and comments and ratings should be used. ![]()
Comments and Ratings: are very well used and the amount of them is indicated on the search results. Users can verify a torrent to be clean and real or tag it as fake, virus, password or low quality.
Sorting: by seeds, leeches, health, size, date, name, age and category.
isoHunt.com is a comprehensive torrent search site and lists over 4 million torrents from its own trackers and other trackers. These torrents contain over a petabyte of content. isoHunt is a comprehensive search engine that lists torrents from many trackers. Because off this, they can not remove "bad" torrents. Comments and ratings should be used to avoid these.
Comments and Ratings: isoHunt has comments and ratings which are well used. A user can either "Flag" a torrent (bad) or give Thanks (good). These ratings will show up in searches as -1 (flag) or +1 (thanks). Comments can also be made and the number of comments is also indicated in the search results. There is also a feature to search for comments on the torrent elsewhere and to Google search the Info Hash to find information elsewhere.
Sorting: by seeds, leechers, category, age, size and name (tags).
KickAssTorrents is a newer search site that is fast and good. There appears to be a large listing of torrents, but I was unable to find a number at their site. They have verified torrents (clean and real) as well as comments. There appeared to be a large amount of verified torrents. ![]()
Comments and Ratings: Comments appear to be well used and the last 5 comments can be viewed by hovering over the comments icon in the results list without going to the torrent page. Also, a good number of verified torrents.
Sorting: by size, date (age), files (number of), seeds and leeches.
Torrentz is another comprehensive search engine that lists over 6 million torrents and has 55,000 torrents that have been verified to be clean. Torrentz also has the nice feature of listing all trackers for a torrent, not just the ones embedded in the torrent file. These trackers can be added in to the torrent active in your bittorrent client and will most likely speed up your download. They also have cloud search of the more popular search terms.
Comments and Ratings: are well used. Users can verify a torrent to be clean and real or tag it as fake, virus, password or low quality.
Sorting: Torrents may be sorted by name, date created, size or number of peers (seeds and peers/leeches combined)
Unique Torrent Search Sites
Vertor has the unique feature of only listing torrents that are verified to be clean and password free and downloadable in full. They presently list almost 800,000 working, verfied torrents. This is an ad free site. For more information on its features, see FileShareFreak.
Comments and Ratings: Comments are available, but since all torrents are verified they are not much used.
Sorting: by seeds, leeches, date, category, size and description.
Podtropolis lists only iPod compatible content. I could not find statistics, but there appears to be a good amount of content listed (although certainly less than the popular sites above).
Comments and Ratings: comments and ratings are available and seem to be well used.
Sorting: None
Coda.fm is a music albums bittorrent site. There is a good deal of information on the artists and albums. All listings are verified to be clean and real. If you are looking for a public, music only, bittorrent site, then this is the place to look. It is an ad free site. The amount of listings is still quite small, being in the thousands.
Comments and Ratings: available, but rarely used as listings are verified.
Sorting: Their unique search results and limited listings do not allow for sorting and it is not needed.
Between the popular sites above, one should be able to find just about any content wanted. For the hard to find items this meta-search engine may be helpful:
Torrents.to is a meta-search engine. Searches take you to other search sites. Allows you to choose among their available search sites for the ones you wish to search.
There are no comments/ratings or sort features as the search results take you to the pages of the various sites searched.
All of these sites have received a green rating from WOT (Web Of Trust).
This is not a comprehensive list, but rather a starting point for new users that should meet their needs.

The Opera browser gives a big red warning not to navigate to the Torrent-Finder web page because it says it's a fraudulent page. Opera says it will try to trick people into "sharing personal or financial information". Opera says it "strongly discourages" visiting the page.
Thanks for that. I have removed it.
It has a green (good) rating from Web of Trust (WOT) and I encountered nothing bad on my Firefox (with security add-ons). I also had no issues with IE.
However, I downloaded Opera and when I went to the site I was redirected to a malware scam. After changing the default pop-up blocker settings in Opera (to block all), I was no longer re-directed, but it still is not safe for the average user.

What do u say about Demonoid ?
This is a listing of public bittorrent sites, where no registration is required.
Demonoid is a semi-private site. Many of their torrents are available to the public, but some are only listed for members.
I have found that almost all of the torrents at Demonoid can be found on public sites. They list 221,000 torrents total and 183,000 are Demonoid torrents. To me, the site is not as big a deal as people make out.
Ahaa, sorry 4 the confusion.
Tks 4 all the info provided about torrents and software.
I wish to u and the team here all the best, u r doing a fabulous job.
Actually, thanks for bringing it up.
I see so many people asking about Demonoid on the internet, that it is good for people to know why it is not listed here.
Happy New Year and all the best to you and yours

Can someone comment which of these sites handle Magnet URL's?
Regards
max
I found magnet links to be less efficient than torrents. But, they are worth mentioning and I will add to the info when I have time.
kickasstorrents, btjunkie and bitsnoop offer magnet link alternatives.
The rest listed here do not.
Update The information has been added to the article, along with a link to the GreaseMonkey script Magnet Catcher.
May I say a sad goodbye to the once wonderful site of Minova, which due to a court ruling,it is but a pale shadow of it's former self.So RIP Minova.
http://mnstat.com/images/blog/index.html
MiniNova was my favorite for a long time.
I stopped going, and removed it from this list, when the court trouble started getting bad months ago.
They hung in there, but once targeted it is hard to avoid trouble.
RIP indeed
Steve
http://www.bitscrap.com
Torrent Search Engine that focuses on highest ranked downloads by seeders and leechers.
what about www.torrents.to?
Excellent site.
No ads and fast.
Searches a good number of sites and shows all results from each site.
Plus a large listing of torrent search sites.
I will add to list when I have time.
Thanks
Steve
I'd suggest to try out http://bitsnoop.com/ - new torrent indexer, still in beta. Looks decent though.
Thanks for that, it looks very interesting.
It is fast and has some nice sorting features.
I like their display of files, trackers and details.
Lacks verification, comments or ratings which could help avoid fakes (and I found a couple fakes in my search).
Although they do list the info hash, which could be googled to find more info.
It would be nice if they had that option built in (along with comments/ratings).
We have comments/ratings now.
Also we've just launched TV Finder - kinda unique TV series/shows torrent catalogue.
Enhoy! :)
-- Guys from Bitsnoop.com
Nice work. The TV Finder looks interesting.
I will add to list when I have time.
Thanks
Steve
Torrent-Finder.appspot.com is a Bit Torrent Multi Search Engine which searches torrent sites and trackers, and shows all the results in a single table. It's based on Google AppEngine, and I think the torrent search has been never so easy.
It's a beta yet, but it's my favorite torrent search site. Try it!
http://torrent-finder.appspot.com
Thanks, it's gorgeous! It's works fine for me.
I like that site. It can search 7 sites, including two of my favorites and has good sort functions. It is also fast.
However, it still has some bugs to work out. I typed in the same search term three times and got 3 different sets of results. On the third one, it looks like it finally got it right.
Hopefully, they will get those kinks worked out.
Personally, I would prefer if they switched a few of the search sites.
Thanks for the tip though. A good search site. I'll keep an eye on it to see if they work out the errors.
I wonder if they will have name issues with the Torrent Finder site listed in the article.
Steve
mininova and torrentreactor.net is nice...
I find that the comments at torrentreactor are not well used and they really do not have a good rating system.
They have a fairly large listing of 1.4 million torrents.
Not a bad site, but I think the comprehensive search sites listed here are a better choice because their comment/rating features are better and used more frequently.
MiniNova is always a good choice.
Thanks
Steve
Update: MiniNova has changed since this post and is not one of the better sites to search at now.
I like torrentz.com a very popular torrent search engine!
I had de-listed torrentz as it had a red warning from McAfee (which it did not deserve). However, torrentz has a green (excellent) rating from WOT and therefore I am adding it back in.
Torrentz has a nice feature of listing all the trackers for a torrent, not just the ones embedded in the torrent file. Adding these trackers in to your download can help increase speed.
Thanks
Steve
The DADDY of them all is www.demonoid.com
Registration open time is limited, first few days of the month are best time to look.
You should try Bitgle (www.bitgle.com)
It's really nice!
Best,
I am not a big fan of the Google based search machines, but this one is very fast.
No ads makes it nice also.
But I do like the options to sort that these other sites have.
It is a fast and comprehensive torrent search engine and would appeal to some of the readers here.
Thanks for the post.
Steve
You gotta check out http://www.TorrentZEN.com/
It searches tons of top-notch torrent indexers in real-time, and you can instantly sort, filter, and categorize the results (Web 2.0 style). Best of all, it doesn't bombard you with ads, popups, or douchy Usenet links.
I agree.
I recently replaced PizzaTorrent with TorrentZEN in the article as it searches more sites, gives a more relevant result listing and, as you say, does not have the ridiculous Usenet links.
TorrentZEN definitely is worth checking out.
Steve
Update TorrentZEN is dead and the link for it leads to a commercial site for iPhone applications. Obviously, it is no longer listed above. PizzaTorrent is also now dead.
Oh, duh. I didn't realize this article already mentioned TorrentZEN.com. Heh, I misread it...
BT Junkie is ok.
I'm looking for Mephisto-subliminals torrents.Usenext claimed to have it so I signed up on the free version, but couldn't get hold of it.Contacted support, but was told used their server was a foreign server(in Germany), so they couldn't tell me whether it was really there or not.Saw it was on downloadnova, signed up, but couldn't get hold of it either.Seen it on other torrent sites, but no longer seeded.Read on google; downloadnova is a scam site.Anyone know where I can get it, preferably virus free?
torrent powersearch widget for opera :D
I prefer Torrent Moon Search Engine
http://www.torrentmoon.com
http://www.torrentreactor.net/ has been a favorite of mine.
I like that you can search by genre, but they should have some kind of ratings to help weed out fakes (unless I am missing something).
Thanks for the post.
Steve
http://www.torrentscan.com/
Ewe. torrentscan is nasty mess of frames. This isn't the 90s anymore, dude.
Torrentscan is a meta search engine, that searches at a variety of sites, one site at a time. It brings the reults in directly from the sites.
I used to use it, but at that time it had a lot of popups. Seems like they have eliminated the popups.
Good site to search.
