Search Over 10,000 File Extensions With This Database
This free searchable database of file extensions contains information on over 10,000 file extensions.
File extensions are those little letters after a dot on most computer entries. Microsoft Word uses the .doc extension and .mp3 are audio files. .txt is a text file and .jpg is an image file.
Most of the entries also include what the file extension is or does as well as what operating system it's associated with.
The database covers Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.
The file extension information page covers file extensions, file descriptions, program or programs (software that uses that file extension), file type, the operating system, company, any additional notes and who the extension was submitted by.
The database is searchable by alphabet, using the search bar, or by any of these types:
* Audio
* Backup
* Compressed
* Data
* Disk
* Image
* Text
* Video
* Developer
* Encoded
* Executable
* Font
* Game
* Miscellaneous
* Plugin
* Settings
* System
* Web
This is a useful but annoying database, in that ads for a registry scan, performance scan and scan for outdated drivers appear on each page. The ads also appear on each page of the file extension definition as links in a box called "Tools" and aren't marked as advertising. Its a little misleading if you ask me. The ads offer scans, and they will indeed scan your computer, but as if often the case, if you want it fixed, you need to buy a program. I'm sure a short search of the freeware on this site will net you a program or two that does basically the same thing.
With all that its still a good resource for file extension information due to its ability to search several ways and the size of the database that is updated and added to on a regular basis.

Another one that a lot of people like is FILExt.
It does have a good amount of information and it often links to guides for the software to open the particular extension.
It is searchable through a search bar (particular extension) or alphabetically.
There are some ads on the side that are the same type of questionable programs at the other two sites.
With these places it is a matter of personal preference for the layout as they all are pretty similar on the extension info. I have always found information on an extension.

Thanks for mentioning them. They are both good sites.
BTW I just checked and the registry scan product for all three sites is the same product and that product gets a warning raised from WOT when you get to its site. I am pretty sure that Rhiannon's "scareware" assessment is correct.
So for those who are not familiar with this kind of thing, these sites are to be used only for information on the extension you are looking up and none of the ads or scan offers should be visited.
I prefer FileInfo.com, although it is very similar to this site in many respects.
It also allows search by alphabetical, category and search bar.
It also has the offer to scan for file extension errors, but not as visible as it is at this site and there are no other scan offers.
It lists programs (for Mac, Windows & Linux) to utilize the extension being looked at, but the list is not always complete. Plus there are links to the pay products, but only the unlinked name of freeware products.
I like the search at FileInfo better, no pull up of multiple pages it just takes you to the relevant page.
They also have some informative articles, but they can be difficult to find.
There are also links to their sister sites that offer Computer Tech term info and online chat acronym & emoticon info.
