This Screen Shot Utility Is Simple, Convenient and Powerful

I've never really bothered with installing screen-shot software.  If I need to grab some or all of a Windows screen, as I do to produce the pictures that accompany all of the Hot Find postings, I generally rely on the built-in feature within Windows.  Just press the Print Screen key, along with Alt or Ctrl, and it grabs the current screen or window into the clipboard.  I can then paste it into my favourite image editor (which happens to be an ancient copy of Paintshop Pro).

But a relatively new bit of freeware might change my way of working, after all these years, because it's so easy to use.  Lightshot (http://lightshot.skillbrains.com) installs as an addin for Chrome, Firefox and IE, as well as a desktop app.  When you want to grab the screen, just press the Print Screen key.  The screen darkens, and you can then use your mouse to select the size and position of the portion you wish to grab, which lightens again.

When you've chosen the portion of the display that you want, there are various options at your disposal.  You can, of course, save the selected image to your PC as an image file.  Or, in a single click, you can upload it to Facebook or Twitter, email it to someone, or load it straight into the "prntscr" online editor to process it further.

All in all, a very handy tool for anyone who needs to grab Windows screen shots.  And it's only a 1.7 MB download.

Thanks to user Frank for this great find.

For small disk space, you can't beat MWSNAP.

No, you can't annotate the image, but you can do just about everything else, and it doesn't suck up resources. It's fast and has many options for capturing.

I also suggest you have a look at Greenshot
http://getgreenshot.org/

It allows to quickly edit the capture

Tiny program Snippy.exe does the exact same and is only 100 kilobytes. Webshot.exe lets you copy a .HTML to a .JPG which you can later edit with another program.

I agree with bartprg. I am also using the Paint Shop Pro version 7.0 from the year 2000. It starts up within 5 seconds (just try that with any other graphics software from the last 7 years !!!), and does a great job for basic graphics editting. If only current software could load within 5 seconds ! Unfortunately, bloatware not software is the trend

Faststone capture for me lightweight and portable
[Link removed]

I have it as part of my Liberkey portable apps.

FastStone Capture is no longer free. That's why I removed the link. However, last freeware version can be found on some sites.

First, for both barprg's and Richard's benefit: Even new versions of PaintShip Pro have screen-capture; and it works about the same way as it did in version... oh... say... version 9, for example.

This LightShot looks quite interesting. If one needed nothing more than a screenshot tool, it seems more than okay. And the psuedo-lightbox effect is kinda' cool.

I will say, though, that using it as a browser plug-in makes no sense. A screenshot utility needs to be independent of the browser... something that's in the system tray (or, as we're supposed to call it, starting with Vista, the "Notification Area"). Fortunately LightShot seems available as a desktop app, too. So... good.

I still insist, though, that PicPick...

http://www.picpick.org/features

...has no rivals. None! It is, hands down, the best screen image capture tool of which I'm aware; and it comes with tons of other features, to boot.

Ashampoo, believe it or not, also makes a quite nice screen capture tool, with automatic drop shadow and all kinds of other nifty stuff. I can't remember if it's freeware, but a commercial version is offered with a free license key several times a year, all over the place; so it's, in effect, freeware.

Free Screen Capturer...

http://www.screencapturer.com/

...is also nice because it captures both still and moving images. It's made by Extensoft, the same folks to who make Extensions for Windows, Free Extended Task Manager, and other cool stuff.

There are other tools, too, that are pretty cool; however, if I'm in a pinch to quickly recommend some good ones off the top of my head, these come immediately to mind.

I'll check this out. BTW, if you use an ancient copy of paintshop pro, why not use the capture tool in that program? I've been using the same copy of paintshop pro now for about 13 years, and the screen capture works just fine.
