Right-Click on "Start" Freezes!

Everytime I try and right-click on "start" or try to access the context menu of a file, as in an "Erase" option or even "rename" a document, I get the "hourglass" forever, everything freezes and I have to do a hard-shut-down.
This is very frustrating as now I'm reduced to taking the long way to "disk clean up" and so on and have no idea how to "erase reycle bin" or "rename" documents with no right-click capability.
Yet it functions for the system tray icons-but nothing else!
I've had problems with "System Restore" in the past therefore I learned to turn it off after a fresh install,so that is not an option.
Can anyone much more PC literate than I offer any help to alleviate this problem?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..:) Thanks

Have u added any new explorer extensions recently ? Those that would add commands to the right click menu.
Some may noy be compatable with rightclicking on the START.
I don't know if it helps, but that looks like a Windows Explorer problem to me. I just google it, and I have found this KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165
Have you started in 'SafeMode'. I love this program
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/bootsafe.html
Just install it on your desktop and it will reboot in safemode. From there you should be able to resolve a lot of problems and if nec backup.
Tony
Yeah Tony safemode still freezes as well and all I really have is a few documents I "back-up" on e-mail account storage as well as all my music files are stored there as well.
It's just VERY tedious to do all the Windows updates AGAIN with an OS reinstall, not to mention all my programs to re-dl as well.
Eventually I'll say ok that's enough, lol, and do it if I don't find a solution
soon.
But thanks alot for trying dude:)
