replaces excel only

Hi, I already have MS Word etc., but not Excel (I have the free Microsoft Excel reader but that does not allow editing). So I don't want a suite (Open Office; Star Office), but rather just a free and simple program for viewing and editing .xls files.

Can someone help me?

Spread32 is also a nice program. Try it out.

Thanks Guys,

I finally followed through on the OpenOffice installation and realized that I could install just "Calc" (spreadsheet program) from the Oo suite.

Others might want to know while all components must be downloaded together, selection is possible after unpacking, at the second stage of installation, by de-selecting the other components.

My problem solved thanks for the help.

There's certainly no advantage on doing that, the instalation size is more or less the same and OO will use the same resources. But you are free to do it, of course.

Hi

Can you use Gnumeric?

Have a look at:

OpenOffice Calc or Gnumeric will do the job...

Funny enough I did see something not so long ago and thought 'Why would anyone want an excel view?'. You obviously do and I shall wrap my brains to see where it was. Oh, and it was free. Will report if I find it

thanks Tony,

I have the MS free Excel viewer, but it does not edit. I want a free viewer/editor for .xls files but can't seem to find one. Hope someone here can help me.

The excell and word viewer provided by MS are helpfull when you are converting complex documents. The conversion provided by OO is good but not perfect. I know, I've had that problem in the past.

Here is my find:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c8378bf4-996c-4... This is a small download

http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?familyid=1CD6ACF9-CE06-4... This is a larger download, not sure if its free, but you have to have excel on your comp to use it

Here is another that might be of help as well. It views all your docs, not just Excel

Didn't take to long an o Google search, but I hope its the sort of thing you are looking for. Not tried myself I have to say, but let us know which one you choose, or if you find another as it may help someone else.

thanks Kent, I already do that with Google. But there are times in transit and so on when I am not online but would like to edit lists etc.

So I would like a free (stand-alone) replacement for excel, just to view and edit .xls files

If you have a Gmail or Zoho Account, you can upload and edit Excel spreadsheets online. I don't think you do VBA like that of Excel, but there are some pretty amazing things you can do. And if you have sensitive information, you can then remove the file when you are done with editing the file and have saved it off.

Google docs spreadsheets might be the answer. I can't seem to find just an editor and sorry Leslie I got the wrong end of the stick earlier. I now realise its an editor you wanted

You don't expect to have proprietary technologies like VBA in free or open-source programs, do you ?
