Replace Windows Find
Last Update: Tue, 08/26/2008 - 15:43 — kdyer
We have talked about Locate32, Agent Ransack, etc.
What I would like to do is take Agent Ransack and replace the Windows Default Find or Seach with it. I know that FileLocator Pro (the Shareware version of Agent Ransack), you can do this in the application. Anybody have the tools to do this?
Thanks,
Kent

Got this to work..
Only been tried on Windows XP.
Go to http://mythicsoft.com download and install Agent Ransack.
Naviagate to in regedit:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FindExtensions\Static\ShellSearch
Create a new String Value (REG_SZ) called: OriginalValue
Copy the Windows Default Search from (Default) {169A0691-8DF9-11d1-A1C4-00C04FD75D13}
Paste into OriginalValue
Go to:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FindExtensions\Static\AgentRansackFind
Copy it's (Default) REG_SZ value: {6646F704-1528-4B5C-BAB7-176FA4B5F80A}
Paste into:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FindExtensions\Static\ShellSearch
(Default) REG_SZ value:{6646F704-1528-4B5C-BAB7-176FA4B5F80A}
Now, open Windows Explorer and try to do a search. Voila! You now have Agent Ransack to search for files.
Thanks,
Kent

Sometimes I use Regshot, too. I also use RegFromApp (Nirsoft app again) which is the most handy if you just want to know registry changes (no scanning, results are immediately)
This is for an article "Monitor your installation, app or ..." something like that. I hope someone will write it, because it's very useful.
Do you mean context menu or F3 hotkey or both?
I use XSearch which has option "Add XSearch to context menu" then I remove (Windows) Search context menu entry with ShellMenuView (Nirsoft app). I also use HotkeyP (hotkey manager) so when I press F3 it launchs XSearch not Windows Search.
Also you can use InstallWatch Pro (freeware) to track down what is FileLocator Pro doing (in registry) when you activate that option.
You are right.. I did not even think of that..
BTW, you can also use RegShot to do the Registry sniff too.
