A Quick Way To Install Dozens Of Free Apps

If you're setting up a new PC, or you simply feel like a major download-fest, then www.ninite.com could save you a lot of time.  The home page contains a list of around 80 of the best-known free applications for Windows, including web browsers, messaging apps like Skype, media players like Spotify and Songbird, image viewers, security tools, and more.  Just tick the boxes for as many apps as you want, then download the custom installer that will be prepared for you.

The installer, which is typically less than 0.5 MB, will then do all the hard work for you.  Just start it running, sit back, and it'll automatically download and install all of your chosen programs so that they're ready to run.  A real time-saver indeed, and it's completely free. You don't even need to register.

The installer runs on Windows XP and above, and will automatically take care of ensuring that it downloads the correct version of each app, such as whether you need 32- or 64-bit.

I often test out new software on various machines, consequently I have to reinstall occasionally. This program has saved me hours and as yet has not installed any tool bars. It also allows you to leave the machine unattended while it does its job very quickly. I estimate around 1/6th of the time it would take manually, not to mention the time taken to find all of the necessary programs and download them. My personal opinion is that it is superb at what it does

I just finished updating a friends computer and tried this service.
This has been available for many months now but, it's the first time I needed it.
This service will update and/or install numerous programs all at once.

I checked over Thirty programs with only one installer.
It downloaded and installed all of them without toolbars, trial subscriptions, giving out my name or email address, or answering questions.

http://ninite.com/

All software is top rated, used by many, and FREE.

Some of the software I installed include:
Firefox, iTunes, Google Earth, SuperAntiSpyware, 7zip, Foxit Reader, Drop Box, Open Office.org, Flash, Shockwave, CCleaner, and Revo.

I highly recommend it if you have the need to do multiple installs.

I forgot to mention that there is a Linux version too!

I posted the above review elsewhere. I also sent them a note telling them how much I loved it.

Ninite was previously the subject of a concentrated effort to spam here. It seems their main objective is to sell the paid service. We are happy for this post to remain but if the usual stuff begins to follow, either here or elsewhere on the site, then all will be deleted.

by veekay on 16. February 2011 - 9:51  (66528)

Ninite works very well, and is useful after a fresh OS install, especially since it can provide the 32-bit or 64-bit app variants, and exclude those spyware toolbars.

Ninite misses certain apps that I use and usually install on a fresh system.
But we can always suggest our favorite apps, and they get added after a review
(added faster if they are popularly demanded).

For those who are security conscious, the Secunia PSI is another great tool to keep on top of those pesky app patches/updates and close some common security vulnerabilities:

Whilst we always strive to provide our visitors with what they want to see, the agenda for including new products into a review is decided solely by the editor of the category concerned.

We actually view repeated demands for the inclusion of a product as either spam or trolling, depending on how the posts are presented. In this respect they are less likely to be included, if at all, in a future review.

If there are genuine requests to review a new or updated product, editors always do their best to comply. The time scale within which this happens though is down to them as everyone has different demands on their time.

by mchldpy on 22. February 2011 - 23:16  (66948)

what are the chances he was talking about the process on ninite's website, recommending software for them to include on their installer app and if multiple people request it it gets added quicker?

by veekay on 26. April 2011 - 20:46  (70972)

Oopsie, I should have been more clear. Sorry, for the inadvertent confusion.

@mchldpy: Yes, I was talking of the app recommendation process at Ninite. At least, they claim to add new apps that are popularly demanded, and I was happy to see some of my fav apps like Everything and Evernote added to their list.

@MC: I know the TSA team are always swamped, so I would never demand new reviews even for any recently popular apps, and even if I do stumble upon something really nice, I would suggest it unobtrusively (with sufficient details in my feedback) for a hot find or tech treat, and wait patiently for you guys to come up with a short & sweet review.

I think I have said it before, and I say it again. You guys are great!

by ssoundman on 14. February 2011 - 14:34  (66411)

Awesome - thanks! There's a great selection of utilities to choose from. I'll definitely use this!

by sunshinekhan (not verified) on 1. February 2011 - 13:08  (65624)

any app that could do this offline would be deeply appreciated ... flaky internet connections is an issue sometimes :(

The applications that you can find there are very useful. I use almost all, specially Teracopy. And I love Fences, Rainmeter and Object dock (the last one isn't actually in this page, but it's terrific)

Since the non-English links are not allowed, I'll put the ones for the mentioned programs:

Very useful: http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php

This helps you to organize your desktop, as well as keeping it clean: http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/

Another stardock product that your are going to enjoy. Specially if you have ever used a MAC: http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/

And the last one, I love this program: http://rainmeter.net/RainCMS/

by MidnightCowboy on 3. February 2011 - 10:05  (65755)

Ah yes, Rainmeter. I used to spend many happy hours with antialias this and x,y the other :D Then I discovered TSA and didn't have the time anymore. IMO Samurize is easier, runs in compatibility mode with W7 but not ideal. Certainly Rainmeter is more satisfying if you enjoy making your own creations.

Its in the second line of the article :D.

by Rony King (not verified) on 31. January 2011 - 15:27  (65583)

Doesn't this program do the same thing as http://allmyapps.com/ ?

by veekay on 26. April 2011 - 20:57  (70974)

AllMyApps.com seems to be a good alternative to Ninite.

Has a neat & clean interface, with lots of selectable apps, app descriptions, ratings (not sure how the rankings are done) and user comments.

Haven't tried it as an configurable app installer, but it sure goes into my bookmarks alongside TSA, Filehippo, Softpedia and MajorGeeks. Thanks for bringing it to my notice.

by Rhino (not verified) on 31. January 2011 - 17:50  (65589)

Who has time to search 1000+ app's, I don't.

by Richie Suraci (not verified) on 31. January 2011 - 15:05  (65579)

cool ...... we will start to use it to install all the goodies

by rbiemer (not verified) on 31. January 2011 - 12:45  (65573)

Looks VERY good!
And, the timing could hardly be better; I am giving away my old netbook and was thinking about all the stuff I want to install after re-installing XP. This will simplify that task quite well.
Thank you!

by miftah (not verified) on 31. January 2011 - 10:23  (65569)

by terrawarra on 31. January 2011 - 3:20  (65553)

Nice, but not all Linux is Ubuntu.

by David Roper (not verified) on 31. January 2011 - 2:28  (65548)

...my problem is how do I go on and uninstall dozens at one time.
but seriously, this looks great to use.

by AnonymousErv (not verified) on 31. January 2011 - 19:22  (65592)

David: Use"Absolute Uninstall"

by Harufy on 31. January 2011 - 2:08  (65544)

Sounds very good, but how does it handle some of those pesky toolbars like Ask that get installed with some programs by default unless you clear the tick?

by Chilli on 31. January 2011 - 2:59  (65551)

I use this all the time, all the junk apps with this programs do not get installed. Never had a problem

by Atilio (not verified) on 31. January 2011 - 2:23  (65545)

To Harufy:
From their web site " No Toolbars Ninite says "No" to toolbars and other junk."
