Problems with Vuze v4.04
Hi there Keroffs,
I have been using Azureus for years in my now old pc with Winxp sp3. Azureus went through all the updates to the latest version, but the interface stays pretty much the same. Overall I am pretty happy with Azureus in the machine.
Last month, I bought a new notebook, with Vista home basic (32bit). To be exact, a new Thinkpad X200 with 2.4Ghz core-dual and 3GB of ram, and this is my first time moving to Vista. As you can tell, I am like a school boy with a new toy BUT.....
Here is my nightmare:
First some unrelated to Vuze problems:
1. Programs like Skype, Network Meter (sidebar), and Zonealarm Suite will crash or hang and I have no way of Ending Process in Task Manager. These processes will just stubbornly stay there until I reboot.
2. Restart, Shutdown, Reboot is just a pain for me; if there is a crash process/program, Vista will take forever to restart/shutdown/reboot. I have already gone into the registry to optimize the "WaitToKillAppTimeout" and "HungAppTimeout" values. The pain is Vista will restart/shutdown/reboot, but it will take up to 10mins before doing so.
Vuze related:
1. Vuze v4.04 consistently crash after running sometime, or if connection suddenly dropped, or if my pc went to sleep mode and comes back out.
2. After the crash Azureus.exe process will stubbornly stay in the Task Manager, no matter how I try to Kill it, it won't go away.
3. All the torrents that I am downloading in Vuze will not reconnect, or re-establish, just greyed out. Dead.
4. The only thing was to restart Vuze, but it won't. This puzzled me the most, I guess it has something to do with a dead process of Azureus already running.
5. Giving time for Azureus.exe in task manager to stop by itself is NO GO, its never.
6. I have to reboot Vista to get rid of the process, and this is the time when I will curse the take forever restart/shutdown/reboot
All these problems I never encounter in my WINXP SP3 box, its still running as is today. But my Vista notebook is totally another story.
I have look all over the net for solutions or similar problems like mine, there seems to be very little or non exisitence. Keroffs, please help. I love Azureus and its plugins, but I am tempered now to switch to uTorrent.

vuze worked great on 50+ torrents for 4 months 900kb/s+
Intalled Zone Alarm extreme security suite 2009
Now DHT has connection issues, even after opening ports with expert rules
Periodically "just stops" downloading, and sits there
Will resume downloading if I kill the process but....
Cant seem to kill the process while Zone Alarm is running
If I boot without loading zone alarm by: Start > run > msconfig > startup tab, and uncheck zone alarm, It is good to go like before I installed zone alarm.
Anyone know, could this be java related?
APART FROM EACH OTHER, THEY ARE 2 OF THE BEST PROGRAMS I HAVE USED EVER
Most likely there is an issue with Zone Alarm and Vuze. Zone Alarm has a bad reputation with all bittorrent clients.
This guide is for an older version of Zone Alarm, but may still have some info to help. I do not know if there is still an "Internet Zone Security" section in Zone Alarm, but if there is that is usually the cause as an exception needs to be made there also.

Zonealarm still have serious problems with Vista up to now!
There isn't only problems with Bittorrens also with browsers.
If your search internet for "Zonealarm + Browser + stops" keywords you can find a lot of issues like this.
Maybe Zonelab is waiting Windows 7 for their new program. :)
Abit late but you need to return your new puter, none of what you claim should ever happen, period unless you have a virus of sorts that is causing it. Yes new as in brand new pcs can have viruses and I am sure yours does. I have five systems running vista, 32 & a 64's so I have had this problem, with two and brought them back...they were returned systems both of them so just take it back and cut your looses... its not worth the trouble to fix and the problems may return later anyway so take it back now! Keep in mind Vista will not run unsigned drivers period you can not hack Vista so forget the darn off market virus protection programs they not needed, use 360 or something and not more then one protection program its just over kill and will just screw things up so, bring it back and start fresh with a new system, 64 is still a bit more of a complete setup but better in the long run to have if you are willing to be a bit patient but Vista OS is way better then XP period once you understand it 100%. Hope this helps.
Crap advice. Azurus/Vuse does this both under Vista and Server 2008.
I remember seeing some issues with the 4.0.0.4 and dual core. I will check and get some info back to you.
But, the problem may be elsewhere so I would like to get some additional info.
What security software do you have on the Vista machine?
Did you install the Ask toolbar?
Steve
Hi Keroffs,
Thanks for replying so soon, I am using the ZoneAlarm Security Suite 2009. And I did not install Ask toolbar. Please let me know if you need any other info to diagnose the problems. Thank you.
ZoneAlarm is a big problem with any bittorrent program. I have seen issues with both Vuze and uTorrent (more so on uTorrent) where the process will not die. Zone Alarm does not allow the bittorrent program to properly close its connections and the bittorrent program will not exit from memory until it does. Generally, ZA causes a lot of issues with bittorrent (and some other programs).
My first suggestion would be to try a different Security Suite. The advice given at the uTorrent forums is that Zone Alarm has to be uninstalled.
Also, it is a good idea to disable sleep mode if you are running Vuze (or any bittorrent program) as this will cause issues.
The Ask toolbar was causing some issues on a few computers, so it is good that is not the issue as it can be troublesome resolving that.
You could try the suggestions in Best Free Firewall and Best Free Anti-Virus to keep protected while checking this out.
Let me know how it goes. There are some other possible issues, but I'd rather not have you mess with them as I know Zone Alarm is a big issue with bittorrent. So let's see if the uninstall of ZA resolves before going further.

See #3
I have no 3rd part firewall etc. Vuse will not die when closed. Managed to kill it with 'Process Explorer' from Sysinternals, but hat only worked with once per windows session. Vuse shows up as a sub-process of Explorer.
Hi Steve, thank you for the advice.
Here is what I did, I have uninstalled Vuze, and gone with uTorrent. Followed all the guides you have provided here and also the guides of setting up ZoneAlarm in uTorrent forum. So far, just started downloading, it good and very fast. I don't know if the dead process issue will turn up or not, but I will give it these few days to test it out and let you know.
The reason that I have not gotten rid of ZoneAlarm Suite yet its because I just bought it and I hope to use it up.
On another note, have you heard any good things about Norton Internet Security 2009? Will it be better then Zonealarm? I have a friend selling the stuff, so I can get a good discount on it, thanks.
Norton is 'Bloat-ware', and a waste of money. Most of the major brand-name packages are more trouble that they are worth. Free AVG is light-weight & pretty good, as is AntiVir.
Many of the current common virus / malware get through antivirus (e.g. WinAntiVirus Pro/ Personal AntiVirus Pro etc.)
Best bet download the following tools for post-infections fix ups
Malwarebytes' AntiMalware
ComboFix
SmitFraud
HijackThis
I do not go to the security forums anymore, so I am not up to date on how good (or bad) Norton is nowadays.
However, I have not seen any problems with bittorrent and Norton and I do go to a lot of bittorrent forums.
Hope the change works.

Vista Registry
Personally, I think users should always avoid hand editing the Vista registry: the risk of error is simply too high (although the risk can be reduced by rock-solid backup practices). There are almost always utilities that will do this safely. Search this site "Registry" "Vista" for more info.
Non-Vuze
Your Vista machine is v. poorly setup, & you badly need to sort the boot problem. I'd recommend downloading the SysInternals Toolkit from here to findout why you can't kill those processes, etc.
http://www.lewe.com/
If it was me, I'd also be on the phone politely demanding to IBM Customer Support (local)that they fix the boot problem etc.

Hi Peter,
I will give SysInternals Toolkits a try, I have one question though, will Process Explorer or Process Monitor be able to kill a stubborn process? Thank you.
I think so, but I simply cant remember about 32-bit Vista Home.
Bu the BIG point is that you shouldn't have any problems rebooting, or handling failed (hanging) processes .... you need to find out why ... and consider totally re-installing (which can be tricky on Notebooks).
