Probably the Best Free Security List in the World

Introduction

Our motto: "Si vis pacem, para bellum."  (If you wish for peace, prepare for war.)

This huge list of free computer security products and services has been compiled over several years and is continuously updated.

The purpose of the list is to provide a comprehensive documentation of the security products available rather than specific recommendations.  If you are seeking recommendations then check out our comparative reviews of security products (links to them are shown in the list with ) or view the personal suggestions of the list authors at the end of the list. We also offer free personalized security advice via our Security Wizard.

The products on this list are almost exclusively free with a few exceptions. These include useful products without a free alternative that offer lifetime licenses or commercial products of outstanding merit.

If you are looking for a particular type of product use the index table below to go to the appropriate page. If you simply want to browse the list then click the link at the top of the index to view the list as a single huge page.

Note that in some cases the links in the list point to executables. In such cases replace [dot] with . and the link will work.

We encourage you to use the comments section below to let us know about dead or incorrect links, suggest products that could be added or simply to tell us about your experience with particular products. We really value these suggestions and look carefully at each one. Sometimes this takes a little time but rest assured your comments will be noted.

Disclaimer:  We have tried to make sure that all links are legitimate. So in case of  a "detection" by your antivirus the most likely explanation is it being a false positive. However, as cybercriminals compromise multitude of web sites daily, we would like to be informed for any potentially malicious links. Some of these programs may also harm your PC if they are misused. You use any of the applications at your own risk.

Just Interested in the Prevention Antivirus is it antivirus and antispyware? I noticed it uses Sophos and Lavasoft engines is that just for the paid version. Is that a good combo?

by ako on 26. January 2010 - 6:39  (42094)

Haven't tested, but it should be reasonable AV+AM+AS.

by ako on 26. January 2010 - 6:39  (42095)

I had the same experience with a friend's PC.

There is a new VirusTotal Uploader version available here: http://blog.hispasec.com/virustotal/47

Thanks!

For the My Documents taking a long time to load, I have a relative who had the same problem and it stumped several of us who are somewhat computer literate. We managed to find that she had a very large file that was taking forever to load. It was a Garmin map update file that was over 1 gig. Once that was deleted My Documents loaded just fine. Check to see if you have any very large files in that folder or any sub-folders in My Documents and either back them up and delete them or just delete them if you no longer need them. Hope this works. I run MSSE on Windows 7 and have had not problems with it.

Any comments on the hazard shield? I didn't get much info on the website other than its got a new version. Is it still in beta?

by ako on 5. February 2010 - 9:01  (42859)

Haven't tried that.

I just tried the free edition of Forticlient Security Suite, customized to Anti-Virus, Firewall, and Application detection modules. So far, so good, and does not seem to hog resources or present frequent annoying alerts.

Good alternative to more of the well-known security suites. Something to consider.

Interesting. Thanks for informing!

This has to be the best list that I've ever come across,.. well done !
I've recently installed "Immunet" cloud based malware protection,.. so far, so good. I'd be interested to know if any of you have anything good or bad to say about this one.

I've got the impression it gives a good extra layer.

by Anonymous on 19. February 2010 - 10:47  (43947)

Great list. I reference it all the time. Personally I think Prevx should be removed since the free version is virtually useless. "Pay now" and remove your malware.

by ako on 19. February 2010 - 11:02  (43948)

I disagree. To know that you are infected is even more important than being able to remove. (And you can do it then by hand or with other tools.)

by Anonymous on 24. February 2010 - 2:04  (44319)

There is also a free version of Outpost I don't see that linked in your list. Not the "Trial-Pay" one, just the free one on the same page.

Definitly the best best list. unfortunately I saw it after using the net for five years.

by ako on 26. February 2010 - 22:27  (44574)

Thanks! I have had it public only 4 years and 3 months so far (first only in finnish though).

The Clam Sentinel program provides a real-time antivirus scanner for the free ClamWin antivirus program. ClamWin is required to be installed and configured first, and then Clam Sentinel can be installed. Sentinel is designed especially for older computers, but it has been tested on Windows XP and Vista machines and is available for use on them as well. It will probably work on Windows 7 also but has not been extensively tested on it.

Sentinel installation and configuration is easy. Sentinel comes with a default configuration that is suitable for most users, but it can be "tweaked" via two configuration option menus (Settings/Advanced Settings) that are available by right clicking on the Sentinel badge icon in the Windows System tray. Sentinel provides real-time scanning (Via ClamWin) for hard drives, USB/removable drives, and the optional detection of Potentially Unwanted Programs. It has real-time and memory scan logs and provides easy access to the Quarantine folder.

Both Clam Sentinel and ClamWin are free, open source programs. ClamWin can be downloaded from http://www.clamwin.com/

Thanks for that. Clam Sentinal does not have a home page as such, so this link will take you to a forum page with some info and a download link.

You should add "Simple Adblock" to the browser security list. It uses Adblock Plus' EasyList. Been using for it ~6 months on IE8 and haven't noticed an ad on 98% of sites.

True but it's not really freeware. It's crippled payware.

by ako on 9. March 2010 - 20:05  (45262)

True. For this reason there reads: Prevx (no removal, see footnote)

by Anonymous on 12. March 2010 - 23:12  (45459)

on My mind, it will be nice, if you mark separatly x64 bit application

by ako on 13. March 2010 - 1:02  (45464)

This is something I have been thinking of. However I would need help here, as it would be an enormous task to do this.
