Probably the Best Free Security List in the World

Introduction

Our motto: "Si vis pacem, para bellum."  (If you wish for peace, prepare for war.)

This huge list of free computer security products and services has been compiled over several years and is continuously updated.

The purpose of the list is to provide a comprehensive documentation of the security products available rather than specific recommendations.  If you are seeking recommendations then check out our comparative reviews of security products (links to them are shown in the list with ) or view the personal suggestions of the list authors at the end of the list. We also offer free personalized security advice via our Security Wizard.

The products on this list are almost exclusively free with a few exceptions. These include useful products without a free alternative that offer lifetime licenses or commercial products of outstanding merit.

If you are looking for a particular type of product use the index table below to go to the appropriate page. If you simply want to browse the list then click the link at the top of the index to view the list as a single huge page.

Note that in some cases the links in the list point to executables. In such cases replace [dot] with . and the link will work.

We encourage you to use the comments section below to let us know about dead or incorrect links, suggest products that could be added or simply to tell us about your experience with particular products. We really value these suggestions and look carefully at each one. Sometimes this takes a little time but rest assured your comments will be noted.

Disclaimer:  We have tried to make sure that all links are legitimate. So in case of  a "detection" by your antivirus the most likely explanation is it being a false positive. However, as cybercriminals compromise multitude of web sites daily, we would like to be informed for any potentially malicious links. Some of these programs may also harm your PC if they are misused. You use any of the applications at your own risk.

I'm glad if you found the list useful! :-)

by Anonymous on 4. April 2010 - 19:13  (46961)

This is truly a Great list of Software,I use lots of these! I'm a IT Professional, its my second job.
Lots of the security software, and other tools are useful! I have issues sometimes though, with the way people think of software.I've heard many people say well if its "Free" it doesn't always work! That has to be one of the BIGGEST LIES I've ever heard. Many free tools in dozens of software areas can be better and Software that is not free. It's all about Advertising, and Promotion

The other issue is,how people use the computer! All these programs above are great some work better for some than others! Sometimes people use too many of them, once again it becomes more of a "It gives you a good feeling" you're protected or being more efficient and then people's computers start running slow and then they use something else. etc etc! On and on!

I don't even use Anti-Virus,I do regular scans using different tools, and I'm a downloader...But I know how to use my pc,the problem we got here is people being un-educated and spending money when they don't need too.But Gizmos is Awesome and how it informs people! I just think more people need to focus on really understanding software, and 90% of these companies get their money from people who don't want to google or ask a professional, they read blogs and there you go.

I guess its my view on it.

Anyway Great site and Staff

That's sad to hear. On my malware testing machine it has worked flawlessly. Hopefully you had disk image available?

Well, I'm speechless! There's nothing else like this the world. I reckon a medal or some certificate of honor is overdue for Gizmo and his team and all who help. This has developed into a stupendous work, seemingly without end. Where would we be without it? And there's a huge bond of trust between us folk and Gizmo and his team, whose honesty and integrity are without question! It's so refreshing to find such open honesty on the Internet riddled with thieves of all types and sizes... Congratulations Gizmo and Company! Bob.

Thanks for the kind words Bob. Ako puts a huge amount of time into expanding and maintaining this list, and still finds time to do other things for the site as well. It's always nice when the effort is appreciated.

Not to speak about MidnightCowboy, and many, many others!

Clam Sentinel's home page is at http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamsentinel/ on source Forge. Sentinel was originally designed for Windows 98 and Windows 2000 machines, but it also works well on XP, Vista, and Windows 7 machines as of today, April 16, 2010. It provides basic file protection, but you should probably use it with an Antispyware/Antimalware program like Windows Defender (real-time) or the free version of SuperAntiSpyware/Malwarebytes, or a behavior blocker like WinPatrol or Threat Expert. I currently use it with Windows Defender, WinPatrol, SpywareBlaster and the free Windows Firewall on my Vista machine. I download all Windows patches, keep ClamWin updated hourly, and set ClamSentinel set to scan in real-time for the 50 most dangerous file extensions. Spyware Blaster is updated once or twice a month and WinPatrol warns me about autostart/hidden files. I do a daily scan with ClamWin. My little security setup seems to provide pretty good protection--all for no cost.

Regards,

Bob

Wondershare time freeze link doesn't work for me.

by Anonymous on 24. April 2010 - 6:34  (48323)

Due to site politics direct links to executable files and non-green WOT-sites are forbidden. In such cases replace [dot] with . and the link will work.

To AKO

Everyone needs a hero. Ako you are my hero! Thank you so much for the excellent work you did on this list. I don't know if you make any money doing this, but it is worth paying for, and you provided it for FREE! This is going above and beyond the call of duty. Words can not describe how great this list is, even if I disagreed with everything in it. YOU RULE!!!

Hi Antti !

Thank you very much for this very exhaustive list ! :-)

GeSWall and DefenseWall seems to be very similar considering their approach.

Could you say why you prefer DefenseWall over GeSWall ?

Thank you.

by ako on 13. May 2010 - 15:56  (49729)

Well, both give excellent protection. I started to use DW due to a free Give-away. (I had tried GesWall free earlier.) I noticed that the developer of DW is very active and gives great support. This means that he corrects bugs very quicly. So DW gives almost always 100% protection. GesWall gets new versions not so often, but in practice it is also almost unbreakable.

You should try both and decide which suits better to you. For average Joe DW might be a bit easier to understand and use.

by ako on 13. May 2010 - 15:56  (49730)

thanks!

by Anonymous on 14. May 2010 - 16:58  (49786)

Thank you Antti for your answer !

I have investigated a little bit more about GeSWall and I finally saw the table showing the differences between the free and the paid versions of it.

The free version seems to be too restrained compared to the paid version and it seems clear that DefenseWall is better.

hey! my html tags are not working!

by Anupam on 30. May 2010 - 18:15  (50632)

Yes, they will not work. We have had some trouble with spammers using code injection... to hide links in their comments. Therefore, for anonymous posters, we have disabled the html code.
