In Section 9.2. System virtualization: one of the listed products, Powershadow 2.6, it NOT Freeware, it is 30-day Trialware and costs $39 for a full license to use.

Should be removed from the list

by ako on 26. July 2011 - 17:02  (76266)

This version 2.6 is free to use. The key was given out by the company itself.

@ 2.1. AV-Scanners

VirIt eXplorer Lite (Free edition) http://www.tgsoft.it/english/home_eng.asp

Italian antivirus, quite effective on infected computers.

by Anupam on 27. July 2011 - 10:22  (76298)

The free version does not remove malware after the trial period of 60 days.

by J_L on 27. July 2011 - 20:02  (76334)

I don't see why not with so many red-dotted scanners.

I see there is a free antivirus called Zoner. It has a desktop version and a product for Android phones. The site says the av is free and it is listed on icsa labs. Here is a link to the product, it looks fairly comprehensive. I have no idea about its detection ability.

A request, please do not post about this in multiple locations. We see this as spam.

Secondly, the product seems to be in beta phase, and available for testing purposes. I find such software bait and switch... that is, they are available for free when they are in beta. Once they come out of beta, they become commercial.

Also, its not clear whether the products are free. On their homepage, it says under one block something about low price. Then, on another page it says the products are entirely free. Whats the exact situation?

I am not entirely convinced with the product, owing to dubious information.

@ 13.9. Fake e-mail generator

Mailnesia http://www.mailnesia.com/

Automatically clicks registration links

by lapalissiano on 28. July 2011 - 10:17  (76349)

I agree, now it isn't available: "You cannot download this version right now."

by MidnightCowboy on 28. July 2011 - 10:48  (76350)

"The research and development of Zoner AntiVirus is financially supported by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic, as a part of the ministry's IMPULS program".

Not wishing to appear cynical, but if this is true it at least has some potential, but for us only if it's free :)

by Anonymous12345 (not verified) on 28. July 2011 - 16:35  (76377)

FWIW- the antivirus is certified at the ICSA lab at this link, looks like it has been around a while, https://www.icsalabs.com/vendor/zoner-antivirus . Also, they have an android antivirus that is free and very popular (user ratings) in the android market, here is a link to that page- https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zoner.android.antivirus

Not that the android market makes the antivirus any good for windows, but the av looks to have some credibility and worth keeping an eye on.

by J_L on 28. July 2011 - 20:05  (76394)

Interesting, they have an online scanner and lab submission as well.

I'll try the Linux on-demand scanner. Nevermind, that requires the real-time suite, which I don't want.

@ 20.8. Partition recovery

Partition Find and Mount http://findandmount.com/pfm/

"Partition Find and Mount is absolutely free for personal use. However, the maximum speed of data transfer is limited to 512 KBytes/s which is enough for use at home"

by Rizar on 29. July 2011 - 16:35  (76465)

I'm not sure if it's on the list, but I have constant problems installing Chrome extensions. I always get "Chrome Web Store The app is currently unreachable". I guess my ISP blocks the store.

Odd that the power of Almighty Google is so unreachable.

Since VPN didn't work for me, one popular fix I found in a forum is here (Quoted response):

"You have to use some proxy to make it works. It seems that in some countries/IPS it's blocked somehow."

Currently I`m camping at Yellowstone and won`t be back for at least 6 days. I`m limited by a Amazon Kindlle and 3G. I believe ako is vacationing for the weekend as well, so this list will be inactive for a while.

Here is another free tool for the list. It is called KyplexAV.

It is an online service that scans websites for viruses.

Finally back, but it's going to take a while catching up.

by J_L on 8. August 2011 - 23:40  (77247)

I find all these down-votes annoying, and entirely baseless.

This list depends on users to contribute as well as updating by ako and myself in order to be successful. All of this nonsense may be detrimental to that process.
