Softpedia users can presently get "WinUtilities [GIVEAWAY] 9.79", the full Pro. version. I just used my free Softpedia account and downloaded this, but haven't installed it yet and just read a little about this suite in the forums here.

There are enough users in the forum here basically warning about using this and similar suites and I'm not sure that this suite, including the full version, provides much that I need anyway. I have and use CCleaner and a few disk defraggers that have been recommended in reviews here, as well as Microsoft's or Sysinternal's PageDefrag, which never has any cleaning to do now that I'm using Win XP instead of 2000.

For RAM, memory management, I'll use a tool that's only for this purpose; presently switching to CleanMem. The same is also true, so far anyway, when wanting to scan the Windows registry. I've downloaded registry tools recommended here at Tech Support Alert, but very rarely bother with the registry.

For Internet optimization, which I don't think to have any need to do now that I have hi-speed connection, but if I wanted a tool for this tweaking, then TCP Optimizer seems to be the tool to use.

So although I've downloaded a free copy of WinUtilities Pro, what use can someone who has and uses the above tools (and only recommended and recommendable ones) really make of this suite? Is it better in any way(s)?

The putils.com website link kendall provided on March 11th for "Perfect Utilities" is no longer valid. The link is automatically remapped for the homepage, only. And I tried to do a google of the website to see if google could find another putils.com page for "utilities", but this didn't provide a different result. Google returned two links, one for the home page, the other link for another page, putils.com/content/view/28, and I tried loading the latter page, but it's also auto-remapped to the home page.

So it seems that only the home page is now valid.

And what's on the home page? WinUtilities from YLComputing. It's all putils.com evidently is promoting, now. Actually, what putils.com is promoting is "WinUtilities Suite", which apparently does not even exist. putils.com provides the link to ylcomputing.com, but checking the products at that website does not show WU Suite. The website only shows WU Pro, for WU products, that is.

There's some false promotion in the pcutils.com home page for WU, as well. It shows the Softpedia logo with a 5 of 5 stars rating for WU, but Softpedia's review presently gives 4 of 5, instead. And it's not for WU Suite.

Softpedia presently has a download for "WinUtilities [GIVEAWAY] 9.77", btw.

I checked CNET as well and the staff there have not reviewed WU Pro, but they reviewed the free version of WU and give it 5 of 5 stars, while cnet readers, 127 of the, gave an average of 4 of 5 rating. The editor review, dated Feb. 16th, 2010, doesn't say anything about limitations, or any features being disabled in WU Free Edition though and ylcomputing.com shows a lot that's not available with the free version of WU.

Anyway, Softpedia doesn't list anything for WU Suite and neither does PCMag.com. putils.com shows a PC Mag. Editor's Choice award for WU, so I tried a Google of pcmag.com to try to find out if what putils.com is saying is true and pcmag.com evidently doesn't have any content at all about WU Professional, Pro, or Suite. pcmag.com has content for WU, but not pro or suite, and nothing for WU 9.x, while the current version of WU is 9.77. Google returned several links for pages at pcmag.com for WU 5.x, whateve the ".x" is (I forget now), but that's a long way from 9.77, which is nearly 10.

So pcutils.com is lying, a little anyway.

There was no need of such a long post. If you look at the opening line of the article, it clearly says :

"It appears that the developer of Perfect Utilities has removed any mention of Perfect Utilities from their website http[COLON]//putils[DOT]com/ and replaced it with a sales page for WinUtilities Pro."

So, the author of the article has warned the users, that the software at putils is no longer freeware. The author has provided links for the WinUtilities freeware.

So, you have talked about putils in your post, which has a commercial software, and there was no need of such a discussion for a commercial site.

by kendall on 13. July 2010 - 21:05  (54222)

Post/Hot Find edited to remove reference to commercial product.

Why is it trying to access the internet if the auto check for updates is disabled?

by MidnightCowboy on 10. November 2009 - 15:28  (36328)

Looks like you need to take care about the version number.

"UPDATE - WARNING: Since I reviewed Perfect Utilities, the developer has made update to the software. The latest update, v3.03 comes with Relevant Knowledge, known malware. So if you are going to get Perfect Utilities, I suggest you grab v3.02 until the developer releases a "clean" version of v3.03."

If you have this version number it would explain the connection attempts.

by kendall on 10. November 2009 - 15:09  (36327)

I am not sure. You might try checking with the company.

by Anonymous on 13. October 2009 - 5:49  (34494)

Warning .... from version 3.03 this program installs spyware.

Kendall, Your comments are much appreciated. Don't let some of the "whiners" out there stop you from posting. Keep up the good work :)

by kendall on 28. September 2009 - 2:39  (33440)

Thank you.

Love this site and thank you for all the work you do to find programs for everyone. I certainly know that anything I do (to my computer) is my responsibility, not someone else. You, the suggester cannot be blamed for anything that happens to someones computer.
On another note, I've never encountered any problems (from viruses, errors, etc..) from any programs I've downloaded from this site, and I am eternally grateful for the help you've given (and I've even learned a bit).
It's wonderful to be able to find programs that are free and do the same thing or even better than commercial software, but like anything people should go to the software site and read about it first, maybe look for some reviews to make sure this is what they want.
Yes, Perfect Utilities is almost exactly the same as Winutilities except for a few icon (small appearance changes) and using the word "Perfect" instead of "Winutilities". Installed smoothly, did everything it was supposed to without any problems. The registry search was a little slow compared to some programs but I've found that it finds more (accurate) errors than other programs. I shunned away from the duplicate file finder. This one is a keeper.

With much appreciation....Xanonite

Kendall,
Please keep up the good work.
I have found a lot of great free stuff from this site.
Please do not let BAD NUTS run off the squirrel.
Thanks again to all at Gizmos.

"Please do not let BAD NUTS run off the squirrel."

Alas, that is the Nature of mankind. Just quicker in the Cyber age.

by Anonymous on 16. August 2009 - 17:11  (27241)

I was using WU but quit it when I made a foray into Linux for seven months. Went back to XP and tried Glary Utes, good but just never trusted it fully.
Had a free copy of System Mechanic, but was spammed into submission!

Thanks for pointing out this software, pay $50.00 or get the real deal for Free. That is the question.

Win Utilities has always been my favorite of the choices and this seems to be the same product.

Thanks for the tip

by Anonymous on 15. August 2009 - 16:35  (27166)

I got this and ran all the programs in it and I notice my computer is about 10% faster than it was before, maybe more faster. Plus you gotta like the price. It also seems to have fixed my Firefox problem, which was Firefox crashing at odd times. Thanks.

by Anonymous on 15. August 2009 - 12:51  (27159)

I agree with kendall and hope he will continue listing.
If you do not fancy, trust, like the sound of the name etc. do not bother to waste your and the readers'time by posting comments.
If you have used the product and have a genuine evaluation then let us all know so that we can benefit from your experience.

by MidnightCowboy on 15. August 2009 - 13:08  (27160)

Kendall is one of our most valued and responsible contributors.

The fact that all of us give our time freely to this site in the hope that we can benefit others is totally lost on some of our visitors. This is something we all have to live with, human nature being so diverse. The sad part is that nearly all of the people making these negative comments will already have tons of rubbish on their PC which the majority of us wouldn't even let out of the box. Carry on Kendall.

I agree with Kendall. He is trying to offer assitance. IF you do not want to try then leave it be. IF you try it and experience problems then post your experience - NOT unsubstantiated opinions.

by Anonymous on 15. August 2009 - 8:02  (27138)

i agree completely with you Kendall, don't complain, etc, etc. Barry.

by Anonymous on 15. August 2009 - 4:54  (27120)

I don't trust it.

It'll probably corrput the registry. That what some of these programs do. Especially one's like this that claim to do so much.

Beware!

by ssoundman on 15. August 2009 - 2:36  (27117)

The process viewer looks interesting, but I'm not quite ready to have Perfect Utilities do any cleanup or whatever else on my normal system just yet.

I'll test it first on a virtual computer.

Thanks for your efforts, Kendall.

by kendall on 15. August 2009 - 5:29  (27123)

Thank you for the appreciation.

To others:
I don't list these Hot Finds necessarily because they are something that I personally want or would use. I list them because someone might be interested or want to try out a free product. I don't make judgments when I list them; I am just listing a free product.

To be honest, this will probably be my last listing. I'm tired of all the negative feedback and comments. Maybe I'm being too sensitive, but dang, can't people just look at the posting and decide for themselves if they want to try it or not?! For goodness sake, we post or list mostly commercial products that people can get for free. Don't complain about free software. If you don't like it or if it isn't something you want to try, that's fine. If you have tried it or have constructive concerns, by all means, share them. But, don't bash it without some evidence.

Do I think that novices or neophytes should be using this type of suite? No. Can registry cleaners create problems if you don't know what you are doing? Absolutely. Can any software create problems if you don't know what you are doing? Yep.

P.S. If a virus toasted your computer, then you most likely need something other than this software. You're probably best off reformatting your hard drive and re-installing your OS. I would suggest that you come over to our forums and post a question. There are lots of volunteers over there who would probably be more than glad to assist you.

by Anonymous on 16. August 2009 - 3:48  (27190)

I for one certainly appreciate the work you put in here. You're providing info & links and readers should decide on their needs whether or not they want the programme - and not sling mud.
If they've tried any of the suggestions and run into problems, then it would help if they explained the issue so that others have more info on which to base their decision. If they've found a work-around, again it would be useful to post that info to benefit others.
Feedback should be accurate, balanced and constructive.
Thanks for letting me rant!!

That is certainly your choice and I wouldn't want to try to convince you otherwise. However, if you can believe the link that I posted, and if this is basically a duplicate of WinUtilities, the author of the above-mentioned link/article, claims that WinUtilities is "highly regarded as being near the top" of commercial system maintenance/optimization software.

Again, I'm not personally recommending this software. I haven't used it. I do know that WinUtilities has been around for quite some time and many people like it. In the end, all I can say is "buyer beware" or maybe I should say "downloader/installer beware"?
