Paragon Drive Backup Express For Free

Paragon Software Group is offering an express version of their disk and partition backup and recovery utility. I have used both Acronis and Paragon for disk image backups and I find that there's not much difference between them in terms of ease and reliability.

As a registered user of Paragon software I received an email notification of the free offer. This is version 9 (the latest version - 08/2008) and is not the full personal version, but it handles the average user's basic needs for partition backups.

Backup Features

  • Backup Entire PC - backup an entire hard disk or separate partitions
  • Perform Live Backups - Paragon Hot Backup® technology creates backup images without restarting Windows
  • Storage options for your backups - Save backup images to local drives or external USB or Firewire Devices
  • Interrupt backup operations if necessary
  • Check archive validity of existing archives or when creating new ones
  • Supports USB 2.0 hard drives

Recovery

  • Restore an entire hard disk, separate partitions or any combination of disks and partitions from one archive
  • Create bootable USB Flash drive, CD or DVD to recover your PC on demand

Supplementary Tools

  • Recovery Media Builder: builds a new "recovery media" to boot from in case of an unbootable system
  • Check Recovery Discs: checks the recovery media for integrity and boot ability

User Interface Features

  • Wizard driven User Interface for the majority of operations
  • Contextual Help for all User Interface controls

As you can imagine, Paragon is hoping to build a user base that will eventually decide to upgrade to the full Personal Backup version.

THIS PRODUCT IS FOR NON COMMERCIAL USE ONLY

And how do you obtain the serial number etc..? Doesn't work for me..!

When you first run the program it asks you to register with your email address. Confidentiality is promised and the option to receive further info is unticked by default. You then get a key by return email within a few minutes. I've got both this and Acronis and find Paragon is less fussy and just as good - although I haven't had to do a restore yet.
Jim.
