Outlook Duplicate Contact Remover

I recently used MS ActiveSync to sync my contacts between Outlook 2005 and my Windows CE-based cellphone. But instead of merging the information as I had expected, the contacts from one system were just written to the other, resulting in a huge amount of duplicate contact Names.

But the one contacts typically contains the email address where the other contains the cell number.

Is there any utility that can fix this problem? Ideally it should merge the different details into one contact record. But if this can't be done, then at least delete the duplicate records.

Another alternative is a new service from Scrubly. The service scans and removes duplicate contacts from your Outlook, Gmail and Google Apps accounts. The nice thing about this service is that it gives you the option of viewing the contacts to be merged in advance and picking and choosing the info you want to merge so you have complete control over the merged data. It also keeps a backup of your contacts.

This is very new but if you want to "start over" it might sort out the mess.

Here's a freeware solution that says it can remove Outlook duplicates. If it works for you, please let us know.

Thanks.

I use it and works fine.

I've used this before. Good for what it is intended for. If you want a tool for Synchronizing your mailbox between boxes (say PC, Laptop, etc) they have a Non-Freeware product too (I have not tried it). This tool seems great to remove all those dups out of Outlook with a Sync with your handy goes bad.

Thanks for that. I tried it out but it's not flexible at all. It will remove dups okay, but in my particular case where I really wanted to merge my cell phone contacts with my Outlook contacts, it didn't pick up any dups because it checks a number of fields and only if they are exactly the same does it delete one of them - not merge them.

I found another utility called "Contacts Scrubber for Outlook" which is far more the right thing (http://www.teamscape.com). It compares the various versions (sometimes many duplicates of the same contact with slightly different info), displays the records side by side and highlights which info it will use in the single merge record. This is updateable.

The snag is that it is available as a 30-day trial version, and a paid version which has many more features, including automation rules and unlimited contacts (trial limited to 1000 contacts).

For now it has fixed my problem, but I think it would be a very handy utility to have in the future.

Anyone can ask any software related question in this Forum.
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee correct, or even useful, answers.

This synching problem seems to be OS dependent.

I'm inclined to think that MS support is the best place to go.

You should include "even from moderators", in the "Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee correct, or even useful, answers." phrase.

Of course; I thought it was self-evident.

Microsoft Office Outlook.

Outlook is shareware, this is hardly the best place to make that question.

What do you mean? Besides the fact that Outlook is not shareware, why on earth can't I inquire about a freeware utility to fix a problem in Outlook? :(

Are you talking of Outlook Express? That's not clear in your question.
