Online Graphical Dictionary

This free online dictionary produces diagrams that illustrate how words associate.

Its a little hard to describe this dictionary. It might be one of those things you have to go see for yourself.
The results from a search in Visuwords look something like a mindmap diagram. Or, as the site says, the diagrams are reminiscent of a neural net.
Visuwords uses Wordnet at Princeton University, an open source database built by students and researchers.

At first glance this dictionary doesn't look like much. Digging a little deeper turns up some useful and interesting features. Entering a word will bring up items that are related to that word in diagram form. Entering the word 'Mango' brought up edible fruit, the latin name of the mango, and mango tree. Clicking on Mango Tree brought up so many results that the diagram looked like fireworks. Most of the results are clickable and will bring up related material, the ones that aren't clickable show the definition of the word if you hover your mouse briefly over the word.

You can drag and drop any of the results anywhere on the page. I like the chart that shows how things are related to each other - results have lines of different colors radiating out from the center. The color and type of line tells you what type of information it is.
Going to the site brings up a small demonstration of how things connect.
Scrolling in the results area reduces or enlarges the diagram.

Its a fun and interesting resource. Mindmap fans will feel right at home using this dictionary.

I think this is very cool. I forwarded the link to Ukrainian friend who is attempting to better understand the English language. I hope it will be helpful to him.

I also forwarded the link to my sister-in-law who is a public school teacher. This could possibly be a way to teach students in a way that would keep their interest because of the very nice visual representation.

Well Done !
