An Office Suite That's Especially Designed For Kids
OpenOffice is probably the best-known of the free, open-source office software suites. It comprises a word processor, spreadsheet, and graphics apps. But despite the fact that it's open source, few attempts have been made to create genuinely new and useful products from that code. Until now.
OOo4kids is, as the name implies, a version of Open Office (or OpenOffice.org, hence the 3 O's) that's specially designed for use by 7 to 12 year olds. The menus are trimmed down to the bare minimum, to keep things easy. The word processor, for example, allows only a choice of font, size, colour, and bold/italic/underline. The other options are still there, and can be enabled if required, although the facility to do so is password-protected so it's up to you whether or not to tell the child about it.
While the basic word processor in OOo4kids is no better than the bundled Wordpad, which comes free with Windows, the suite does include both a spreadsheet and graphics apps, all of which work nicely together in order to create, say, a document that includes an illustration and a spreadsheet.
OOo4kids is a great idea, especially if it encourages kids to use computers for something other than playing games or social networking. The program is quick and easy to learn, and gives them a real feeling of doing grown-up things with their computer. The product is free, and you can get it from www.ooo4kids.org. It's available for Windows (32-bit), Mac and Linux, and the download for Windows is a relatively hefty 87 MB.
My thanks to site user Fran Bott for recommending this one.

Hell, I need to download this. All I want to do is write letters without using stupid wordpad lol.
If you just want a word processor, there are plenty of them that load fast. AbiWord, for instance. But if you want a powerpoint clone, this oughta be good.
Did you read my previous post ?
( OOo4Kids is OOo3.2.1 less 40% in size, without Base, Java, Basic.
but you got Draw, Calc, and Impress (including annotation mode with Pen and Eraser). .. and so on )

If te UI does not fit your needs, in tools -> Options (or Preferences on Mac), you can change the level user, and then have more items in the toolbars.

As example, we are working on a new Writer Wizard.

Last but not least, we work with students, and train them to the OOo source, code (OOo4Kids is based on).

And a lot of other things :-)

To be honest. My kid, 9, already uses Word, and sometimes better than I do. Excel is still mine, but not for long.
Good idea if kids were just kids... these days we have kids 2.0. they come with the knoledge OEM.
This might be a great tool for writers too, who want nothing more than a simple text editor that reminds them of the ancient WordPerfect 5.1.
WordPerfect for DOS still has quite a following. Check out wpdos.org for all the details on using it on a current system.
However, I find Darkroom to generally be an adequate replacement - entirely distraction-free. Of course, it's only for plaintext, but fancy page layouts and exotic formatting was not a strong point of WP 5.1.
For writers, there is a nice and free alternative from Ashampoo (developed by SoftMaker Office in fact). It doesn’t expire, it’s no trial and it makes perfect PDF files! See here:
http://www.softmaker.de/reg/ash08_en.htm (to get the license key)
Greetings from Brazil.
[Edit] direct links to executable files are not allowed
I hope Softmaker won't transfer your mail address to Ashampoo when you register. Because they will bombard you with unwanted advertising for their products!!
The number of emails sent by Softmaker is very low.
I did have some problems with file associations after uninstalling it however. I suggest users pay careful attention to re-assigning these to another program and make sure they open OK before uninstalling Softmaker.
True but in that case wouldn't the free Wordpad included in Windows be just as good?
Or does this OooKids have some more features?
My dear old Gran might like it as well as she hates all the 'bells and whistles' of Word.
Cheers,
Paul.
