New Microsoft Service Fixes Common PC Problems for Free

Fix it Center is a new Microsoft service currently in public beta that provides a set of online and offline tools for diagnosing and fixing common PC and device problems.  It may be a beta but it’s already a useful and highly usable product that offers a support lifeline to many average Windows users with PC problems.

Fix it Center consolidates into a single product a whole range of trouble shooters, wizards and other support resources currently scattered throughout the Microsoft site and Windows itself. It works with any Windows version from XP through to Window 7

The program will not only solve known problems but will also scan your PC for potential problems and suggest fixes.

The nice thing about this product is that it requires little technical input from the user. All the user needs to do is indicate the broad kind of category describing the problem and then the program will launch a diagnostic program for that category.  So if the user is having an internet connection problems he/she just needs to select that category and from that point on diagnosis and correction is largely automatic.

Anyone who has used Microsoft troubleshooters will be familiar with this approach though Fix it Centre is more advanced in its implementation than most MS Wizards and troubleshooters: it’s easier and less intrusive to use and has broader diagnostic capacity.  But it is still far from perfect and users need to be realistic in their expectations what this program can achieve.

How it works

To setup Fix it Centre you need to go though a three stage setup procedure:

  1. Go to http://fixitcenter.support.microsoft.com/Portal/ and click the “Try It” button. This will download a small 437KB program.

  2. Run the downloaded program and accept the licensing agreement. This will then initiate a download and installations of the full Fix it Centre product.  No download file size is given but it appears to be around 10MB.

  3. Fix it center will install a number of troubleshooters based on your PC configuration but to tap into the full power of the product you need to setup an online account. There you will not only have access to a full range of troubleshooters but access to other support resources as well such as the Microsoft knowledge database. Additionally you can store the support history of your PCs on line.

Using Fix it Centre is a snap. Just click the Fix-it Centre icon installed on your desktop, select the broad area where you are having problems and the appropriate troubleshooter will be launched which will step you through the problem detection and correction procedure.

I tried it on a PC with a known printer driver problem and it correctly identified the cause. What it couldn’t do was fix the problem as no driver update for Windows 7 is available for that printer.

If the troubleshooter can't resolve the problem automatically Fix it Center at least gives you easy access to a variety of online support resources.

As I said, this is a useful service but you need to be realistic what it can achieve. That said it’s a “must have” product for average users.

first it doesn't install due to the presence of that key "AutoRun.inf" at HKLM/Software/Microsoft/WindowsNT the it does only install 75%.
Hope the final version will be better..... I need it quickly for some other problems...

Beta Testing for Win7 Closed. Can't use site unless you already have a account.

Thanks for all the comments! I won't be getting it, as I don't want sp3 on my XP, and someone said it told them not available for XP on many things, so.. I lived this long without it, can probably continue on just fine. :) Dunno why, but twice when I installed sp3 on my XP OS it crashed & burned me so bad I had to reformat, both times. Too scared to try again. Reformatting is horrible.

If you've installed this & then had to update SP3 or download a new MS .NET Framework to get it working, check your Firefox add-ons! You may have installed MS software into FF without you knowing. What it does, I don't know but it happened to me & I didn't authorise it in any way.

What a great find! When I ran this, it already knew what my 2 main problems are (Frequent Firefox crashes, video freezes on resuming from Standby). It offered to diagnose my Firefox problem, but then came up with Internet Explorer problems, which are of no interest to me, and then decided Firefox (32-bit version) was incompatible with Windows 7 x64! I'm still mulling that one over.

And nothing about my other problem.

But it's certainly a move in the right direction. Good find.

unfortunately, frequent fox crashes is not uncommon nowadays! and it is unlikely that the ms fixer will solve this prob.

chk to see what version u have, i discovered mine was supposedly years out-of-date, downloaded the latest FireFox, seems OK now

by Anonymous on 24. April 2010 - 18:25  (48362)

have got the latest version on xp sp3 and it still has probs ie it sometimes doesn't shutdown properly when closed, process is still running and therefore browser cannot be opened again thereafter unless process is manually terminated. it is a prob documented on mozilla tech, but so far no resolution in this case! tis annoying, so have ditched fox.

I tried this on Win7 and did not find it very useful. Now I cannot get rid of it. Appears to be no uninstaller (even Revo could not find one).

by MidnightCowboy on 23. April 2010 - 16:05  (48260)

On XP with Revo, appears as normal in the program list as "Fix It Centre" and uninstalled without a hitch.

I found this about a week ago and tried it. It's very good software overall & as has been mentioned before, pretty idiot proof.
Well worth downloading - especially if you've been having problems with your computer.

Running on Vista Ultimate SP2 no problems with installation or execution. Great results and it's fairly idiot proof!

by Anonymous on 22. April 2010 - 21:59  (48221)

Installed .NET Framework 2 as the program required and tried installing this Microsoft program. Failed to install. Downloaded it again and tried- nothing. I can see why it's in BETA.

by Anonymous on 22. April 2010 - 15:03  (48194)

Installed and up and running on XP SP3, with no problems.

by Anonymous on 22. April 2010 - 21:04  (48213)

downloaded with W7 64 bit but could not get it to install suggested troubleshooters.

by Anonymous on 22. April 2010 - 11:03  (48182)

Does not seem to be much good for XP. Everything I clicked on said it was not available for XP.

by MidnightCowboy on 22. April 2010 - 11:11  (48183)

From the Microsoft site:

Fix it Center can be installed on:

Windows XP SP3
Windows XP Pro (64-bit) SP2
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Windows Server 2003 SP2
Windows Server 2008
Windows Server 2008 R2

by Anonymous on 22. April 2010 - 10:19  (48177)

Worked fine in Vista SP2 and even fised a long term driver issue that I had given up on.

by Anonymous on 22. April 2010 - 1:10  (48158)

If one has any sort of Live Account, you can log in with that.

If Microsoft can't make the product right in the first instance,.. how the h3ll can we be expected to believe that they can fix it ?

by Anonymous on 22. April 2010 - 13:19  (48188)

When you find the perfect operating system with all the features everyone in the world wants, with no bugs or annoyances at all, please do let everyone know . . . In fact, why stop with operating systems, if you find any product in the world that satisfies these requirements, shout out. Thank you.

GOOD POINT!!!

by Anonymous on 21. April 2010 - 21:40  (48152)

One way could make them change and that is when Microsoft has to face competition. Microsoft does not want competition. In fact a few years back, if they saw that a company could mean competition, they would just by the company. This is what the free market system does to the little guy. Walmart is a good example of how the free market system works. Walmart is so big, they were able to force smaller businesses to close. The EU has levied millions of dollars in fines to Microsoft. The EU has had little patience with Microsoft in the past.

There were some articles in the past that suggested all software that was problematic, and sue the seller for damages. That will make them change. (lol) Am I being too optimistic? I think this could happen if the architecture of the Internet were changed. I am not a computer specialist by the way.

Same as Rigsby - can't install it, and I have XP SP3 also.
