New Free Edition of Paragon Backup & Recovery (10.1)
Paragon have now released Backup & Recovery Free Edition 10.1 (available in 32bit and 64 bit), which is not a time-limited offer, as it has been in the past. It has many new features, including support for Windows 7, cyclic backup - complete infrastructure for establishing a self-acting data protection system, support for the latest hardware and back up and restore of GPT entire disks. There is also support for the latest hard disk partitioning schemes.

i want to know whether this will work in win7 or not. i tried macrium reflect free to take my win7 c drive, it shows working fine, but the bootable cd is not booting, js shows the copyright and blinking the curser. if i press sny key windows will load. this is why i wish to try this one. anybody can say that paragon bootable cd will work in win7? thank u
I would recommend checking their website to see if this version is W7 compatible.
Can I install directly over version 10 or will an uninstall be needed first?
In general, I always believe it is best to uninstall an older version before installing a newer version. This is the case even if "officially" you can install one over the other. I find it just is better, and you end up with less hassles, if you uninstall first.
has anyone actually tried using this thing to recover a dead system? if so, other than the guy who had the complete crash, what results did you get?
its all i use on p4 xphome
works great
Yes and it works every time. If you follow the instructions and use it properly, and it does not restore the "dead system", then you probably have a hardware problem. I have regularly used it in place of MS System Restore. I also use it when testing software I don't want on my system, ie, make system drive image with PBR, install software, then replace the system drive image instead of uninstalling.
I would be careful using this software on an encrypted drive. I tryed it on my system with PGP encryption and it trashed my drive. It said my drive was corrupted and it appears it tryed to fix it. The drive was never to boot again. Instead of backing up everything I had to reinstall everything and I lost important data.
I hope no one else runs into this problem.

Please note that this software will not run on many machines with integrated ("on-board") graphics. It requires SVGA capability, This is stated in the "Requirements" section by the developer;
System Requirements
o CPU: Intel Pentium or compatible, 300MHz or higher processor
o RAM: 256 MB or greater recommended
o Disk space: 100 Mb
o Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher
o Mouse
o SVGA video adapter and monitor
There are ways to patch it to make it run with a different PE ( Preinstalled Environment) such as this one;
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
Which forces it to use the on-board graphics, but the procedure is quite complex and beyond the scope of most normal users. In order to check if it runs on your system, create the boot medium first, and check that it boots correctly before you run any backups etc.
Otherwise this is really excellent software.
Sorry,in case it was not obvious from the above, the software will run fine under windows, and also make backups etc. But the RECOVERY MEDIA will not function properly and "hang" the machine. Because the supplied PE wont support the on-board graphics.
This is of course disastrous if you are trying to restore a system image for instance.
Well...the Paragon FREE 10.1 Backup Edition (64bit) just hosed my Win7 startup files...the backup hung ("not responding") to the point where only shutting down the two processes running--Task Manager--would get the thing closed.....likely the backup program loads something into the boot loader sector which was still there on Win7 (Pro) reboot. Thankfully, I had and pulled out my trusty Win7 System Recovery Dsik and was able to do a system restore point (point just before Paragon install)...also, thankfully, Win7 automatically (apparently) creates a restore point when new software is installed, because I forgot to run a restore point myself--prior to Paragon install...I'm not sure if Acronis makes a 64bit version, but this experience--with the incredible, amazing ***it's FREE!!!*** version of previously unknown (to me) backup software--only reinforces my desire to be extrememly conservative about messing with anything or introducing new software to my career/production dependent PC...and/or let others jump on the band-wagon as early adopters...yikes! To the defense of Paragon, I have no idea what happened--could have been me; could have been the software; could have been an alien applied hyper-focused, micro-geomagnetic forcefield causing a driveread anomaly in my system...but I have no desire to spend time finding out...I just dodged a BULLET, and will let it be a lesson! Good luck everybody!
The only thing I use conventional backup software for is my windows settings. I am still using Titan for that. I use windows SyncToy for backing up documents to my second hard drive. I also encrypt and store critical files online. My true safety net is making and maintaining a image of my entire system.
The point I am trying to make is a multipronged approach makes me feel much safer.
Cheers

I replaced Titan for GFI. I use Acronis True Image. Titan is obsolete.
Since Comodo Time Machine was launched, I've basically said goodbye to these things...there's really not much need
Going by the bug reports I wouldn't ditch all those other products just yet. :)
This could be interesting.
I am using a laptop right now which seems to have the following two programs previously installed:
Paragon Drive Backup 9 Personal Edition
and
Paragon Partition Manager 10 Personal
I am easily confused, so I wonder if someone could explain how this
"New Free Edition of Paragon Backup & Recovery (10.1)"
is different and/or better.
For someone who is an intermediate PC user, and just wants to avoid losing data by backing up files from a laptop to an external hard drive, which product would be best and/or easiest to use?
Thanks for any guidance.
Paragon offers this comparison chart. Good luck! http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/comparison.html
Great, that comparison chart is very helpful.
In my case it seems that the Backup & Recovery Free Edition offers a subset of the features offered by the $40 product Drive Backup 9 Professional, which makes sense.
Thank you.
