Last Pass: 10 Outstanding Features
LastPass is a versatile online password manager, here are just a few of its features
This article is a great review of LastPass, an online password manager. I started using it not long after it made its internet debut and have never regretted it. LastPass has free accounts that should be more than enough for most of us, premium accounts with some added features, and in a move that endeared them to me even more they bought up Xmarks, the struggling online bookmark manager, keeping free accounts there as well. This article (with lots of screenshots) thoroughly covers most of the features found in free accounts.
"..........Testimonials about LastPass fly thick and fast. But is it the last word when it comes to password management? If so, then which features help it to wear the crown? Let’s fire it up and see what LastPass can do for us (rather than how)."
Here's a quick list of the features covered in the article:
- A Password Vault Protected By a Master Password
- Log into Websites with a Single Click
- Generate Secure Passwords with a Click
- Create Multiple Identities for Specialized Passwords
- Easy To Use Automated Form Filler
- Store ANY Sensitive Information
- Bulletproofed Against Phishing Attacks
- Bulletproofed Against Keyloggers
- Synchronize Across All Your Browsers
- Online Backup and Restore for Peace of Mind
LastPass is cross platform, imports and exports passwords, fills forms, supports all major browsers and can be accessed anywhere with an internet connection. The FAQ and user manual are excellent, with the FAQ being organized by product and by feature.

I tend to like RoboForm better. It seems to be more accurate when filling forms and recognizing Login forms for saving my passwords. I also like the "flow" a little better too, but that's probably because I used to it. I've tried keypass and 1password as well, but I like RoboForm the best.
I saw all those articles about the Lastpass security breach. That made me a little hesitant to stick with Lastpass as well.
Lastpass is cloud computing at its best. Totally free for unlimited entries, accessible from anywhere, a host of added tools like security check, which analysis all your passwords and grades them 0 to 100% safe.
Roboform is a 10 passsword limited program, and if all you have in this digital world are 10 passwords then your using repeat passwords logins. Most users need 40+ for all the different sites, that's why Roboform only give out 10 free. Their payed version is an annual subscription, (yes renewable every year) for Robo everywhere, which is also cloud based.
Why a yearly subscription password manager is listed when Lastpass and others are free and unlimited. Roboform is trial software, as most users need 50+ site logins.
The security breach is only a concern for those with weak passwords.
Based on your mention, I went to have a look at RoboForm. You might want to take a look at the RoboForm Wikipedia entry concerning upgrade policy changes:
"Users, some of whom have spent considerably on licenses on the stated promise of lifetime upgrades, have commented on what they feel is the duplicitous, and potentially fraudulent, nature of this change."
@JohnC;
We all like different things. I like the flow of LastPass better than Roboform. :)
Security is a big question mark for me. I don't think anything on the internet or our personal devices is ever completely secure. :O
I personally have a lot of issues trusting LastPass with any of my sensitive information because they force you to store it online and have had multiple major security breeches in the past year. I now use RoboForm because they have 5 different levels of encryption for the user to choose as well as both an online and local versions of the product. Not to mention they offer live phone support which would be a nice feature for a program like LastPass to have considering the headaches caused. Just my 2 cents.
Hi Phil,
I saw the big breach they had a few months ago, but I wasn't aware of others. Can you expand on that?
John
@PhilBlake;
I'd be interested to know about the multiple security breaches in the past year. I'm aware of one issue in May where LastPass had an anomaly in their data flow - it wasn't a security breach but they took steps just in case. They immediately publicized what happened and took action.
I used to use Roboform, it's a paid (and rather pricey if you ask me) program so it makes sense they would have live phone support.
LastPass, being a free product with their premium product around $15 US annually, probably doesn't have the resources for live phone support, but you can usually get someone in their forums to respond quickly.
I absolutely love it as I can log in with ease to multiple sites 7 can choose to have a login password to access Last Pass if I am sharing a pc.
