Keep Vista From Forgetting Folder View Settings
Vista forgetting folder settings in windows explorer is one of its biggest annoyances.
Here are two ways to make that annoyance disappear.
The first method involves step-by-step picture-by-picture directions on how to make the changes by editing the registry.
I highly recommend backing up your registry keys before doing anything.
One way to do this is click on Start, type the term regedit (no quotes, no spaces) into the search box.
If a prompt pops up, click on continue.
This will bring up the registry editor.
With the registry editor running, click on File/Export. In the box that shows up, give your back up a name, and save it in a location you can find easily, like the Desktop or Documents.
Click on Save and in a few seconds your registry is backed up.
If you need to restore your registry, find your back up file, right click on it, and select Merge. You'll be asked if you really want to do that, click on yes.
If you're still feeling brave enough to tackle the registry after having backed it up, take a big breath and follow the steps outlined at the Redmond Pie blog (link below).
The next method works for most people, but one or two people have reported settings not sticking.
Download and install Explorer View from SD Software (link below).
When it runs, there are a few boxes that can be checked.
Check the box "Disallow Explorer to Auto Detect Folder Contents". Click ok.
From now on Vista should remember folder settings.
This method has always worked for me.

Personally, I'm much more comfortable with the registry edit, because I can see what it's doing, and I know I can reverse it. With the Explorer View program, I really wouldn't know what it's doing.
I prefer mucking about in the registry myself.
I downloaded and ran the program, it does what it says it will do.
I normally wouldn't do that, but I have a years long history and awareness of that particular website. They've bailed me of some very annoying Windows "features".=)
