It Starts With A Skeleton

Update: The site has gone to monthly paid subscriptions as of May 2009. Free access is limited to "The Head Region Demo" and Solution Demos.

View an interactive 3D visualization of the human body at this captivating website.

The Visible Body is a complete, interactive 3D visualization of the human body.
It includes 3D models of over 1,700 anatomical structures, including all major organs
and systems of the human body.

You start with a skeleton.
Lists on the left side of the page let you add and subtract any of the available organs or systems.
Click on the liver and the liver appears inside the skeleton, properly placed.
Clicking on parts of the skeleton adds a highlight that identifies that area.
The controls are easy to use, with them you can rotate the skeleton, zoom in or zoom out, and move the skeleton up, down, or to either side.
There's an online tutorial or a PDF download of the controls if you need them, as well as a tutorial and tour of the site itself.
I spent a lot of time on this site. Its quite an attention getter.

The skeleton that's used on the site is female, a male version will be available soon.
Registration is required to use the site, registration is free and the site is completely free to registered users.

The site is resource intensive - quoting the site:
'The first time you launch the application, your browser will automatically download our highly detailed anatomical models. This download can take several minutes to complete, depending on the speed of your internet connection. As long as these models remain in your browser cache, you won't need to download them again on future visits.'
You'll need the Unity Web Player plug-in 2.1+ and Adobe Flash Player plug-in 8.0+
The Unity web player worked across all browsers I used to view the site with one installation.

The Visible Body runs on Windows and Mac's, and supports Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari.

Why is this listed on a freeware site when it stopped being freeware almost a year ago? Bah! When it's limited it's not freeware it's shareware or trialware!

If you read the first sentence in the article titled "Update" you'll see the post was updated some time ago to reflect the change in status.
You might try Google Body, it's similar.

well now the site requires a subscription , so clearly their popularity is going to fall drastically

It appears that this will no longer be free, acording to the website

"The Visible Body is the most comprehensive human anatomy visualization tool available today. Since December 2007, we have been happy to be able to provide access to the Visible Body for all registered users at no charge. During that time, more than 500,000 people from all over the world have registered for the Visible Body, and our bandwidth costs have grown significantly.

In order to keep the Visible Body's detailed, interactive, 3D human anatomy models available to our users, we must begin charging subscription fees in May 2009, so that we can continue to pay for server maintenance and bandwidth."

There is still a free seven day trial and all the parts that are free now, e.g. the model of the head will be free but a subscription will be charged for the rest.

I've used Visible Body for about a year now, and seeming I'm still at school, recommended it to the Biology department. They absolutely love it and so do I!

I agree, it is an excellent site to learn, also learn from my personal mistake : I showed the site to my 9 years old and he had bad dreams for a couple of days after that.
I guess we will have to wait a little longer.

As a Chiropractor, I use Visible Body for patient education and direct curious patients to the site to explore further. Great recommendation!
