Dear dz,
My computer has not been functioning properly for quite sometime. I am only able to get thro internet this week only beginning 1st May 2009. My computer has been sent to "workshop" for repair and it is ok. already. Thanks for all your tips
dz- Thanks for you suggestion. My Windows XP Pro is giving me a big problem.
Right after formatting again the Local Area Connection could not be found and finally after tinkering with the software I finally got it. Ehen I tried to disable Local Area Connection this is what my computer says:-
"Error Disabling Connection"- It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support Plug-and- Play or it may hve been initiated by another user or the system account."
- For your info. I'm the only user who uses this computer. I suspect the installation may have gone wrong after reformatting but it was done using the bundled software provided by HP Compaq- it's not original microsoft though.
I would be very pleased if you have any other suggestions which I can try. Thanks for your above suggestion.
try this,i use it
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
I downloaded it and tried to make a backup, and got all sorts of errors
So I didn't try it. I would have liked to test it but I am a little leary with out making a backup of the registry. Not to mention I don't have connection issues at the moment. If I did - I would run it without making the backup. For what that's worth - dz
Hi - -
There's some really neat little utilities that tell you what is running on your computer.
See page - http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-process-viewer.htm
I have the 3 top picks. They show me what is running on my computer - and if there is something unusual, then I search the file with the search engine... Some of these little programs have one or two listed and they are really helpful.
If there is some unusual process running I disable that process and see what effect that has. Remember to make 'restore points' somewhere along the line. That is, if you really want to save this current install.
You say a complete reinstall did not do any good. Did you reformate the Hard Disk? What else did you do. And I wonder it there could be some problem with the firmware. But - one step at a time. Keep us posted - dz
Thanks 4 your assistance. My computer hard disk was completely formatted after Worm.it attack.I don't know much about computers and I'm not sure I understand how to follow your above instructions about searching files with a search engine. I don't know how to look for search engine and my computer ask me to check with Task Manager but I don't see any icon for Task Manager also. I cannot find my Yahoo toolbar for mail on my Mozilla firefox v3.5 web browser also. I'm locked out of my yahoo mail account also and I couldn't access it with the same password which I have used for years.
Hi -
These little process managers I mentioned before are like a glorified task manager. They show what processes are running on the computer. They show who the author of the program was, ie:Microsoft, Intel etc. If there is something on there which is not recognizable, maybe it shouldn't be there.
These little utilities can usually stop the processes.
You could start with: What's Running - 1.1Mb download
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-process-viewer.htm
http://www.whatsrunning.net/whatsrunning/main.aspx
http://www.whatsrunning.net/whatsrunning/download.aspx
I also use: Anvir Task Manager - 1.53Mb - This one does a lot.
There are also system inventory programs - This one is good -
System Information for Windows (Freeware Version)

I think the rule would be - if you didn't install it yourself and it is not femilure then maybe it shouldn't be there.
When you install these utilities, under processes you will see a lot of file names. Right click on the files name and you will get a 'search online'.
If you can't find the search engines for the virus searches, you could just copy and paste the file name into Google. Try it, , , assuming you can get online.
The worse case is a reinstall. Do you know how to do this? - dz
What operating system are you using?
I am using a HP Compaq Desktop, Intel Pentium D 945 3.4 Ghz, Intel 945g Chipset, 512MB DDR 533 Mhz Pc2-4200, 52x CD-ROM dRIVE, 8 X USB Drive, 80GB 7200 rpm SATA Hardisk, Integrated Nextreme Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet, Integrated Intel Graphic Media Accelerator 950 with Microsoft Windows Pro SP2.
My computer software programs have been completely destroyed by Worm.IT and has just been formatted by a friend. This friend has just learned how to format computers from his employer but not enough know how to make my computer run properly. Even the computer shops in my small town cannot solve my problems. There is no real graduate IT expert in my small town- we just have computer technicians only.
Thanks for your help.
It sounds like XP
If it is asking for a Lan card and there is not one installed, you have to disable the Lan function in Win XP. Go to My Computer, Control panel, Network connections, Right click on Local Area Connection then click on Disable. Restart your computer and see how that is. Let me know - dz
