How To Use Firefox Add-ons

Learn how to install and configure add-ons for Firefox

Firefox is my favorite web browser. I've been using it since its first beta and I still use it as my main browser today, though several other browsers share space on my computer.

One of the things that makes Firefox my favorite is how customizable it is. Most of the customization options come as add-ons, or extensions. A few days ago I was thinking that a how-to on using Firefox add-ons would be a great idea since that part seems to get skipped pretty often.
Luckily for me, I ran across this article that does an outstanding job of explaining add-ons and how to use them. Add-ons can do literally thousands of things. The Firefox Add-on home page has lots of recommended add-ons and is a good place to start. You can find Themes that change the look of your browser on the same page.
If you really like eye candy have a look at Personas for Firefox.

I have installed NoScript on my parent's laptop. Can someone provide some coaching on how to best configure this add-on for both simplicity and protection? Thank You!

Boy, that's a tough one. NoScript takes a lot of attention for it to work properly.
A few options settings that might help:
- allow sites opened through bookmarks
- if you use Flash block or similar you can uncheck forbid Adobe Flash
- you may want to uncheck any context menu options that won't get used.
Two things that I don't like are:
- automatically reload affected pages when permissions change (I uncheck and reload them myself)
- XSS. I don't know but I've had more problems when that was checked with getting pages to work.

A suggestion: check out the add-on called Ghostery.

You'll have to enable it in the options via the add-on menu - it's turned off by default.

If you're using Firefox 3.6 some extensions won't work. =(
Most of them are catching up but it may take a while.

Thanks! I will try the suggestions.
