How To Synchronize Folders For Free Using Synctoy

Synchronize folders using this tutorial and a free program from Microsoft

Check out this tutorial over at Online Tech Tips on how to use Synctoy (free download from Microsoft) to synchronize two folders.
From Microsoft:
'SyncToy, a free PowerToy for Microsoft Windows, is an easy to use, highly customizable program that helps users to do the heavy lifting involved with the copying, moving, and synchronization of different directories.'
Synctoy isn't a complicated program, but having a tutorial with screenshots and directions makes it much easier to use.

(NB SyncBack provides only limited support on Vista)

I used to rely on this to sync 2 PCs my wife and I use but occasionally it would screw up BIG TIME. Possibly due to us both working on different files in the same folder at the same time. I have lost faith in it.

Something worth monitoring is My Documents\SyncToyData where it logs activity in files such as c2e493be00163579161342cbeb5e000319689794L.bin. These logs accumulate and slowly eat into disk space.

Paul.

As I remember I tried to install this program once and found it required .net. Do you know if that is actually the case. I wish Gizmo would write an article as to whether it is still worthwhile to avoid installing .net.

Here are the requirements for SyncToy, both 32 and 64 bit versions:

System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems: Windows Vista; Windows XP Microsoft
.NET Framework v2.0
1GHz Intel P3 processor or equivalent
256MB RAM, 512MB RAM recommended 20MB free disk space

I don't think SyncBack (mentioned already - thanks! - see link) needs any framework.
Its as good as SyncToy and they are similar enough that you can probably work with either.

.net framework, I don't know.......I've not had any trouble with it, but it may still be a problem for others.

I find SyncBack Freeware V3.2.19.0 to be a better program.

SyncBack Freeware clutters registry with every single profile you create. Thanks but no thanks. SyncBack SE is the best.

AFAIK, SyncBack Freeware does not sync file deletions where SyncToy does.

And, yes, SyncToy requires .net.

Cheers
Ultan
