How To Permanently Delete Your Account on Popular Websites

It's easy to sign up for accounts at places like Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.
What isn't easy is deleting those accounts.
Perennial favorite Smashing Magazine has a handy guide on how to delete accounts for these web sites:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • MySpace
  • LinkedIn
  • Google
  • eBay
  • Wikipedia
  • Flickr/Yahoo
  • Windows Live
  • Stumbleupon
  • Amazon
  • YouTube
  • PayPal

I love the handy scale that measures how difficult it is to delete an account at any given site: a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the most difficult. Toss in two impossibles (Wikipedia and, respectively) and you've got the most used sites covered.

A short section on why it's so difficult to delete accounts is interesting reading and includes a term I haven't heard before: Account Deletion Remorse.
Hmmmm, not something I've suffered from.

did clicking on the link to Smashing Magazine just create another unwanted account for me?

Smashing Magazine doesn't have any accounts to sign up for - they have RSS feeds, newsletters, and if you are so inclined, Twitter.
