NOTICE:   I'm sorry but you won't be able to register, vote or post new comments at Gizmo's Freeware from 10.00 PM US Pacific time (UTC -8) on Wed April 15 until further notice.  This is because we are doing a really major upgrade to our site theme and server software.   I apologize for the inconvenience but hey we will end up with a new, more modern look that's friendlier to small screen devices. Our site mission, URL and content will not change. Our forum will remain open during the upgrade. - Gizmo

How To Permanently Delete Your Account on Popular Websites

It's easy to sign up for accounts at places like Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.
What isn't easy is deleting those accounts.
Perennial favorite Smashing Magazine has a handy guide on how to delete accounts for these web sites:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • MySpace
  • LinkedIn
  • Google
  • eBay
  • Wikipedia
  • Flickr/Yahoo
  • Windows Live
  • Stumbleupon
  • Wordpress.com
  • Amazon
  • YouTube
  • PayPal

I love the handy scale that measures how difficult it is to delete an account at any given site: a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the most difficult. Toss in two impossibles (Wikipedia and WordPress.com, respectively) and you've got the most used sites covered.

A short section on why it's so difficult to delete accounts is interesting reading and includes a term I haven't heard before: Account Deletion Remorse.
Hmmmm, not something I've suffered from.
