Joe,
Thanks for the instructions. But I guess I opened a can of worms. What do I do with the other codecs listed, real alternative, quick time alternative, winamp alternative. Do I need all these codecs also? Do I load them under the MPC directory? I now have 2 MPC on my system. Do I delete the FFDshow file when done?

I've written a more complete step by step guide to installing MPC. Here is the link: http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/installing-media-player-classic-...

Kevin,

I emailed you as well, but here is the answer to your question.

The way I installed all of it for my laptop was the following:
1) Install MPC to c:\program files\media player classic. I manually created the directory and copied the program there. (Download the version from my article "Best Media Player".)
2) Open MPC and click on View > Options, then clicked on the
section for "Formats"
3) Clicked the "All" button to make MPC the default player for all media types
4) Download a codec pack (I recommend FFDShow) and run its installation.

You should now be all set at this point. Most every media should play through MPC and it will automatically use any codec's you have installed.

I hope this helps.

Joe,
Thanks for the help. You may see this reply elsewhere. I wrote it as a comment then saw the reply link. So please forgive the duplication.
I created a directory under my documents and installed a copy of MPC, I then downloaded and ran the FFD codec and also the real alternative download. I now have 2 copies of MPC the real aternative created a whole big set of subdirectories one being another copy of MPC, How do I undue this mess and start again. and when I do, Do I need the real alternative and quicktime alternative and winamp alternative? If so, what do I do with them? create a subdirectory under MPC directory.

RealAlternative, Quicktime Alternative and Winamp Alternative will install MPC if you are not careful. During the installation, you can specify not to install MPC and just install the codecs. Also, RealAlternative, Quicktime alternative, and are only needed if you don't want to install Real Player, Quicktime player, onto your system. They are replacements for those programs which will allow you to use MPC as your streaming media player for those formats, should you come across them while browsing. Winamp alternative is a plugin/codec that will allow MPC to connect to Shoutcast streaming radio broadcasts. All three are not necessarily "needed" but they can be helpful.

I would attempt to uninstall Real Alternative first so you get only one copy of MPC on your system again, then install Real Alternative again, being careful NOT to install the MPC option (You should be able to uncheck that option during installation).
