How To Back Up All Your Stuff - For Free

Back up options and how to's for Windows and Macs.

It took a hard drive crash that left all my stuff inaccessible to realize a painful truth: You are only as good as your last backup.
That wasn't the first hard drive that bit the dust on me, and it probably won't be the last, but I did learn my lesson. If its important, back it up. Gizmodo has an excellent article on the how's and why's of backing up your stuff.
Keep in mind that backing up a program doesn't mean the program can be restored to its previous state. That's because the files the program added during installation (dll and registry files) are absent when you restore a program.
Creating a disk image, or snapshot, of your entire hard disk drive is about the only thing that will restore programs.
For more information on disk imaging have a look at the Best Free Drive Imaging Program.

I know all too well what is being said. I have had one hard drive crash on me and had to replace every thing that i had on the drive.
This was after installing my OS again.
Lo and behold i had another problem with my system and had to do another system re-install. This was caused by software which had a bug.
I remember gizmo offering a program to save all your files for free, this i downloaded with the intention of storing everything on the program. Unfortunately that was one of the programs i lost.
I have to agree that some of the items shown are behond the average PC user and can be quite complicated, i would suggest as some have indicated to simplify things a little better

Some people who check the site for advice don't know a lot about computers. For them it isn't natural to look up drive imaging programs etc and a simple title like "how to back up stuff" that has links to the appropriate sections is a lot easier.

Now THAT was truly a waste of time to read ...sheesh

It would be helpful to others if you could expand your answer to include a "why" and some alternative suggestions otherwise your comment is of no value either.
