HELP!!! Problem Created by 5.1 How to Print a Folder File List from Windows Explorer
Implementing this little feature has tied up my system. I just want to know how to get my system back to normal, please!
1. The next AM, after installing this, access to the contents of my desktop folders is screwed up.
- the contents do not appear when I open these folders - instead I get an (apparently) empty folder with Windows Explorer search instead. (At first I thought a virus had wiped out the contents!)
- When I click on Folders, I get the complete desk top folders listing on the left. Clicking on these left folders brings up the contents in the window.
- The files in the window are displayed without file extensions.
- The folders in the window do not behave properly. Clicking on any of them just brings up another instance of Windows Explorer Search. In order to get at the contents of the folders, I have to click on the folders in the listing on the left.
- If I open files from within an applications, everything is fine. That's why I didn't notice the problem until the next AM.
- also, at first, the Start Menu did not work at all. This has happened intermittently since, as I have tried to fix this problem. Currently, it is working.
The files and shortcuts on the desktop are OK. It is just the folders that are foobared.
When I first rebooted, I got a message (approx) cannot close desktop proxy. Searching on this problem brought the suggestion to untick- Windows Explorer >Tools > Folder Options > View > Launch folder windows in a separate process which seemed to fix that problem as this problem was related to the existence of multiple instances of Windows Explorer - which I could see in Task Manager.
I went back through what I did in case I made a mistake and there was one difference. Here are the steps with the difference noted:
a) Open Notepad and then copy and paste the following text into Notepad:
@echo off
dir %1 /-p /o:gn > "%temp%\Listing"
start /w notepad /p "%temp%\Listing"
del "%temp%\Listing"
exit
b) Save the file as Prin.bat in the Windows directory, and then close Notepad.
c) Start Windows Explorer, click Tools, and then click Folder Options.
d) Click the File Types tab, and then click File Folder.
d1)Click Advanced (this step added by Gizmo)
e) Click Edit, and then click New. As Edit was disabled on my system, I just clicked New.
f) In the Action box, type Print Directory Listing.
g) In Application used to perform action, click Prin.bat, and then click OK.
h) Click OK, click Apply, and then click OK.
I don't have many folders on my desktop and they contained mostly shortcuts, arranged for my convenience. I didn't know how convenient until this screw up, LOL!
I went back to Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types>Advanced and tried Set Default (see below). I got the Start Menu functionality back the file folders still do not function properly.
Here is what I currently have set:
Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types>Folder>Advanced
explore
FreeZip Help
open
PrintFolder
TreeSize
Zip
Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types>File Folder>Advanced
find
Print Directory Listing
The items in bold are there because I highlighted them and clicked Set Default in an attempt to fix the problem. I also tried clicking Restore Defaults in both places with no difference except I get icons instead of my usual list display.
I thought that, perhaps, deleting this new Print Directory Listing thing would help but my edit and delete buttons are disabled.
Clearly, I have no business fooling around with this stuff as I only know enough to be dangerous. However, I have never gone wrong with Gizmo's tips before.
I sure hope someone can help me get my system back to normal!
Thanks in advance for any/all help offered.
Jean

I'm using the old XP but I checked it out and saw how it works.
Windows Update creates a restore point every night.
So I checked the date on the Prin.bat file and restored to the night before.
Everything is back to normal and my user files were untouched.
I don't recall installing any software in the past few days but even if I did install some minor thing it will be a small thing to reinstall it.
Thanks so much for replying, anonymous folks!
Told you so!
The last restore point is a long time ago. But that is a good option to keep in mind. What happens to my files if I restore? Do I lose everything since that restore point?
Thanks for the suggestion. If it comes to that, maybe I can put files I know are important onto a memory stick and then do a restore even if it is a while back.
Will my automatic Windows update catch up with all the old updates that I would be missing if I did a restore?
Hmmm. It's getting late I will address this tomorrow. THanks again.
Jean
You're using XP, Vista? System restore rolls back system files, if you installed any windows update after that, running automatic updates will get them again; same thing aplies to installed programs. System restore does not touch your user's files, you have to backup manually. Try searching at Microsoft, the Wikipedia also has a nice article (start there) on system restore.
Did you create a restore point before doing that? Do you have an older restore point? Try using system restore.
Modification to above
All file extensions are missing when I open files in applications as well! Arrrrrggggghhhh.
