Google Wave Is On Its Way - What Is It And What Does It Do?

Need Google Wave details? Look no further than these articles.

If you've heard the buzz about Google Wave changing the world, the internet, and the way people use it you might be feeling a little, well, skeptical. I admit it, I haven't been paying attention to Google Wave. It wasn't available so why pay attention? Since Google Wave is (sort of) due to be released at the end of the month (September 30th, 2009) I thought an overview would be in order.
First off, Google Wave will not be available to everyone right away. Google will be sending invitations out to 100,000 non-developer types starting September 30. If you'd like to keep on top of Google Wave updates you can sign up at Google Wave Update. Who knows, it might net you an invitation.

So, what is Google Wave? One easy to understand definition comes from mashable: "It’s a hybrid of email, web chat, IM, and project management software. Discussions are also live in Google Wave: you will see your friends type character-by-character. Google Wave also supports the ability to drag attachments from your desktop into Google Wave. It loads that file and sends it immediately to anyone in the conversation."
Hmmmm, sounds a little like a turbo charged Gmail. Drag and drop? I'm glad its finally showing up.

To get a little further in depth check out The Complete Guide to Google Wave at mashable.
You'll get terminology, info on gadgets, wave robots, and wave embedding.
Information on wave-powered forums and commenting systems, wave for education, wave for customer support, and web based content management systems are at Google Wave: 5 Ways It Could Change the Web.

I read that they will start sending invitations out tomorrow, Sept. 30 - USA time.
I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do. It has some interesting components.
If you use Firefox you can download an extension called Customize Google that will prevent being tracked along with a host of other options including removing ads.

Typo - Headline should be "Google wave on its way" (no apostrophe in its).

:-)

Typo fixed. Thanks Jon.

God, I miss the good old days back in 1995. Less gadgets. Simpler software.
Everything was slower back then and I think it was better. A cell phone was just a phone. People think things are better and that we are better organized now, but we really aren't. It's just an illusion. We, as a society are too reliant on technology, and in the end that will be humankind's downfall. But this will all come in good time. The governments have had their turn at running the world. We now enter into the 2nd wave of being run by corporations. You don't want to know what happens next, but I think you already know.

most of this stuff(computers, cellphones, etc.) is just a waste of time - its all an attempt to divert your attention from reality and in the end makes your reality worse...

But last fall someone said "Change is coming" and the people, err...sheep, bought it.

That's why I encourage everyone to wear a Tinfoil Hat. It keeps not only aliens out of your brain, but also government super secret spy satellites!

And no, aluminum foil is NOT the same. There is no substitute for tinfoil.

I certainly hear what you are saying.

Sounds a bit like the Windows live package to me?

by Anonymous on 7. September 2009 - 0:18  (32253)

Sounds like bull to me

Boy, I don't like this "live preview" thing... I frequently edit my posts before sending them, and I wouldn't want friends to see my thought process... even simple mis-spellings can be embarrassing. Google Wave gets a thumbs-down from me for that alone... :(

by Anonymous on 21. September 2009 - 19:51  (33060)

you do know, the live preview is something you can disable? so that nobody can see what you are typing before you press done?

by rhiannon on 22. September 2009 - 18:10  (33120)

Thanks for mentioning that.

by Anonymous on 9. September 2009 - 10:58  (32376)

It probably increases the level of spying too.

by rhiannon on 7. September 2009 - 4:45  (32263)

I wouldn't like the live preview either although most Instant Messaging Programs have it. I don't use those either.
It will be interesting to see if it takes off or gets a ho-hum.
