Ever since I installed a-squared Anti-Malware [i.e. as of yesterday] opening txt files takes ca 30 seconds...

does anyone suffer from this ailment too?

I am learning that free offerings of commercial software does not mean that the software is good. It seems that the developers include all these info and warning screens to make one feel the software is watching your system. (why not just do this in the background) They want the customer to feel they are fully protected. In reality all that's being done is an incredible drain of resources. Yes, you can reduce many of those splash screens in the options menu but I haven't been able do away with them completely.

After trying the highly touted bullguard security suite I finally uninstalled it because it slowed my computer to a crawl. For example it took 3 times as long to open firefox. When opening a directory with a large number of files it took minutes to fully open. I also experienced this problem With the free premium version of AVG.

Finally after installing A-square I again starting getting all those splash screens reassuring me it was on the job. Again I believe for the vast majority of users those splash screens are unnecessary. Perhaps only the most security conscious users would find them useful.

This new breed of security software in my opinion is a fad. I envision truly smart software that will still do the job but with a very small footprint.

I am back with Avira, Sunbelt firewall (behind a router) and Iobit 360 Pro. I am happy to say I am back to smooth sailing and have no plans on looking back. I realize now I don't need all the bells and whistles.

Cheers

No it doesn't on my Vista and I would say that it is quite lightweight compared to some software out there.

Do we need any anti-virus software with A-squared Anti Malware????????

No you don't as it takes care of viruses for you.

For those who care about Mcafee security products tri this link http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/11/12/mcafee-virusscan-plus-with-site...

Please be aware that I have never used McAfee myself but according to other reviews I've read it installs adware with the product which can't be de-activated.

A-squared Anti-Malware is designed to work alongside existing software but some other programs are not so co-operative. In any case, with a detection rate as good as A2 why make yourself extra work and risk complicating things? The protection provided by A2 is broad spectrum, including anti-virus. If you like A2 I would use it on it's own and back up your findings with just a standalone scanner like Malwarebytes if you really feel the need.

Thanks a lot for your reply. Earlier i had downloaded Bullguard Interent Security for GIZMO HOT FINDS but uninstalled it today as:

1) svchost.exe was started consuming around 170 MB which tends to keep CPU fan running for quite a long time.
2) Keeps breaking the links whenever i download a heavy file from internet using Download accelerator plus. I have to resume download quite a few times which was annoying. Tried the same by turning off bullguard completely and everything was fine.

Now i am using A-squared Antimalware with PCtools firewall without any problems.

Thanks for the feedback. I too had a few download issues with Bullguard and FDM. Nothing breaking but quite a lag before the download window would appear. I could have lived with that for the protection provided but I appreciate that for others this might not be acceptable. Resource use between the two should be about the same depending on the system but let us know anyway how you get on with A2.

It's just a day after i installed A2 and will surely update upon how that's going. Till now it hasn't given those Bullguard issues. Anyways thanks for your support.

Very nice and much appreciated. Thankyou.

Should work.

My wallet thanks you for a cheap 2009. I got Avira for Free, I got 2 years of Online Armor for $11.09 CDN, and I got A2 for 1 year for free.

I used to spend $40-$100 a year for software to protect and maintain my computer.

Thanks to this site that is now down to about $10 bucks a year.

Not too shabby.

Way to go TSA and all the helpful editors.

Hi is it free now in the UK to download?
Anonymous

Of course it is.
It's free everywhere

Hello,
When can I download a free 1 year program (in england) of Asquared Malware as I have tried it a couple of times and it only gave me 1 month.
Many thanks
Jajo

couple of times, couple of email IDs. it's giving one month trial only. and there's no confirmatory email about the account activation. pretty strange.

however, the 24 hrs deadline is yet to be over.

I'm guessing you did not create a user account on their website.

Click on the link from Gizmos. Then click on the link from A-Squared website for the free one year trail. That takes you to an area where you need to create a new user account. You will then receive an email from them to verify the account. You must click the link within that email to verify before you can use the license. Then, reinstall the 30 day trial, but at the first screen after the user agreement, (where it shows the type of license you have) you need to "log in" to your user account using your email address and password. Then it should refresh the license from 30 day to one year, and you can proceed with installing.

Wrong Guess. I have followed exactly what you have said but its only giving 30-day trial.

OK problem solved. Nabbed it.

After clicking on the above mentioned link you have to scroll down to the Order Online option and select the Single PC one year "Buy Now" button which will open a registration page. Just enter your e-mail ID and you will get the license code + the method to install in your e-mail. Works like charm!!!!!!!!

Anyways THANKS A LOT TO THE WONDERFULL PEOPLE WHO WORKS FOR THIS BESTEST SITE.

Installed and let's see what it's capable of :)
What I didn't like - the numerous options kidna tricky explained IMHO
What I like so far - hosts blocking - yay!!
oh well, it's free so thank you!

Hi there,

Just to let everyone know, that on wilderssecurity forum, someone form Emsisoft posted the following message:
"The license coupon expires after 3 months from registration date if not used" as a reply to the question:
"Does anyone know if you need to install the program right away and/or apply the license to the account immediately or can you still do this in a few weeks?"

So, should anyone have prolems installing A2 right away, no problem, as long as you've activated the license coupon in your account.

Thanks for including this extra information for the benefit of people here.

Thank you - works a charm :)

Midnight Cowboy:
I always look forward to your informed and lucid comments.
I also admire the way that you are obliged sometimes to castigate contributors, without resorting to invective or obscenities. You just hit them with cold, hard facts.
Keep up the GOOD work!

Thank you. I admit that it's sometimes a challenge to remain calm and tolerant in the face of some of the stuff that's pasted here, but posting is a privilege and not a right so we will deal with the inappropriate stuff accordingly. Added to that I'm human like everyone else and have my own favourites so trying to remain impartial is another challenge. I guess the most difficult area to communicate is that of system specifics. Often the same bunch of software you have on your PC will react very differently on mine but of course mine is the only one I can relate to when people describe a problem. The management here is very much a community effort and there are several of us active here 24/7. I tend to be the loudest but that's my only real claim to fame!

I really like my combination of AntiVir Free and Outpost Free. I'm not looking to replace them but sure could use some advice as to whether to add A2 to this combo or maybe look for something else. I also use Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpwyare. I guess I am at medium or low risk, as in the past 4 years I have only detected one bad item, and it was a virus caught by AntiVir. I never found out if it was a FP or not.

Please advise.

Thank you.

Larry

Hello,
I've been using avira antivirus premium, outpost and a-squared anti-malware for a long time with no problems at all. It's rare to see two antivirus programs that do not conflict like avira and a-squared. If you have a lot of RAM available or at least over 512 MB of RAM then get it, cause it's a great program. My avira premium license expired a week ago and since then I installed avira free. I'm using it again along with a-squared anti-malware.
these programs work for me.
Cheers

If you've had 1 infection in 4 years (and it probably *was* a FP) stick with what you have.

Hi Larry

This is just my own advice but from the risk group you identify with I would say you're fine as you are.

There's very little to pick and choose between Avira and A2 in terms of signature detection although A2's currently are more reliable and certainly more frequent. The only extra benefits from switching to A2 would be surf protection and better performance in general from the Malware IDS component (Mamutu) compared to the heuristics in Avira. This might change when the new 'proactive' Avira comes out but I'm not up to date with developments for this so not sure about the time scale. If I remember correctly they are currently still running closed beta testing for the x32 XP, SP 2 or above, and that a further beta is planned to bring in support for Windows 2000, Windows Vista and Windows 7. That said, I don't think you have any real need to beef up this area, and in trying to do so your resource use would certainly take much more of a hit than it currently does with Avira.

You wouldn't have to change your firewall at all so you could always try A2 and then revert back to Avira if you don't like it. Not such a big decision as switching over to Bullguard would have been a few days ago.

Thanks for the advice. I think I might try replacing Avira with A2 just to give it a spin. I am somewhat put off by Avira's update problems though they haven't been affecting me recently. I changed my firewall last night to Online Armor. I got a key for it in one of your promotions and I like the way it works. I find Outpost Free is very good as well, But I have 2 years of paid OA so I might as well use it.

I looked at Bullguard, but I installed the trial version a few days before and from what I read, that would have negated me from taking advantage of their offer.

I also think, from what I read in forums somewhere that if you get a false positive in A2 you can add it to your whitelist so it doesn't come up again. Is this true of this program?

Thanks.

Larry

There is No "On-Access Protection" Or "Real-Time Protection" In Current Version Of A-Squared Anti-Malware 4.5

Moderators comment:

This is not true (from the Emsisoft product description)

"Double realtime protection with signature- and behavior-based detection (Malware-IDS). Also against Rootkits!"

Hey It's True. If You Need To Confirm That Please Read Their Forum Post As Possible OK!. It’s Has Only “On-Execution” And “On-Demand” Protection. But “On-Access” or "Real-Time" Protection Coming Soon In Next A-Squared Anti-Malware Version 5. But On-Execution And On-Demand Works Perfectly In Current Version Of A-Squared Anti-Malware.

Hello,
I've used a-squared anti-malware along with avira premium for almost two years now with no conflict at all between them. I've not tested or used it with other antivirus programs.
Cheers

Will this product co-exist with MSE, or is it meant to replace it?

Thanks.

a-squared Anti-Malware is designed to be a complete security solution (minus firewall) so you should not need to run anything else with it. Microsoft themselves warn that "MSE should not be installed alongside any other antimalware application". There are very good technical reasons for this although many users still believe that they can get more protection from running more than one program. In fact the reverse is true and you will end up with less protection than if you run a single application (depending on the quality of it's performance of course).

Don't forget to use either Windows own or a good third party firewall alongside A2 if you decide to take the offer.

http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-firewall.htm

If you choose Comodo don't set the D+ protection level too high otherwise it might conflict with the Mamutu component in A2. Online Armor free would be a good choice because there is an association between Emsisoft and Tall Emu, and the softwares are known to have good compatibility.

Your statement that "many users still believe that they can get more protection from running more than one program. In fact the reverse is true" is misleading, at best.

*Traditional* antimalware programs (Avira, Bit-Defender, Avast, AVG, Norton, Kaspersky, No32, etc.) won't work together but programs like Malware Bytes, SuperAntiSpyware, IOBit, and (evidently) A-Squared and others *can* happily co-exist with a traditional and, yes, you *can* improve security by doing so.

Several years ago, before this new breed, the traditional antimalwares used to check for others and refuse to install if they found another AV present. They don't do that anymore.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing, my man. It's also contagious so don't spread it around if you don't know what you're talking about.

What Midnight Cowboy said is true and accurate.
If YOU really do know what you're talking about, then I presume that you mean that the first group of apps that you named are "Real Time" protection apps, and the second group are available as "Scan on Demand" apps, and could indeed be used with any ONE of the Real Time apps.
As you said "my man", a little bit of knowledge is dangerous thing....

Please register and post your technical data to back your opinions up in the forum and then we can compare it with mine. Everything I have has been supplied by the leading vendor techs so this will be a great opportunity for you to rubbish their dev teams and shoot them all down in flames. You may of course elect to continue posting unsubstantiated stuff here anonymously so then we can all draw our own conclusions.

Awesome product, Awesome offer.

Hi everyone,

To MidnightCowboy:
I have a question about the procedure.
You say "Please note that a new user account is required to get the free license".
Does this apply even if you have an account only for Mamutu?

Edit:
And are there different IPs needed as with Bullguard?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you will still need a new account but you won't need to request this from a different IP address. Your exisiting one will be fine. When I log in to my own Emsisoft account for instance I have three listed!

The different IP requirement for Bullguard is only for people who wish to install it on more than one machine.

Thanks so much for the reply.
Just to by absolutely sure:
I need to get one for myself and one for my brother (diffrent account).
I can get both from my own PC, without having to worry about the IP, correct?
If not, I'll have to guide him through doing it himself.
